Biography

nNCXcMY.png
When the Wayward Pearl found Ametrine, they took her to be a shipwreck survivor; injured and exhausted. But when some of the crew approached her, the Pearlcatcher's whiskers twitched, and Ametrine hefted her jagged pearl like a mace, ready to fight like a cornered sphinxcat.

Such a character inspired many questions. Pirates as the archetypical breakers of law and expectation, accepted the fierce Pearlcatcher aboard.
They found Ametrine to be brusque but direct. She didn't waste time meandering around topics. If she wanted you to know something she'd tell you. If you asked a question she didn't like she'd tell you to shove it.

The question of her pearl was one Ametrine was proud to answer. Her pearl reflected her warrior's soul. Where many pearlcatchers endeavoured for symmetry and shine as they added to their pearls, Ametrine had learned how to focus additions into spikes, and ensured her pearl was strong enough to embrace battle.

When asked about what battles she fought, Ametrine would pause before saying it was better not to know. The Pearlcatcher had to admit that she was recovering from the last one, as she regained her strength and mended pearl-mace and armour.

Questions about her birthclan and hatchlinghood got nowhere. Even those who gained her trust learn only that she doesn't remember it clearly. With knowledge of her profane foes, it may be thought that her memories erasure could have been either their or her own doing.
Some speculated that these lost memories are why she behaves so unlike the stereotypical Pearlcatcher. But if that theory were true wouldn't she have forgotten to speak?
Veterans of the crushing darkness below recognised Ametrine as having dealt with entities eldritch in nature. It's possible that the Pearlcatcher forgot her past home because the entirety of the place was devoured, expunged from reality itself.

Ametrine always keeps a sharp eye out for artifacts of ominous nature. She doesn't trust those who'd study these artifacts or the matters they adjoin. Ametrine believes scholars can't be trusted to stop their search for knowledge before crossing the threshold of calamity.

Time passes and the wind changes, so too do dragons.
After few nights at a port tavern, the Wayward Pearl's captain didn't return. Several of the crew searched and every tavern patron said that the captain had left town. It was rumoured that she'd caught wind of the misfortunes which had befallen an old flame. It was supposed that she was pursuing word of her old lover's whereabouts into the thunderous deserts.

There were many arguments, but ultimately the crew were unwilling to abandon ship and sea to seek their captain, and there was no sign she planned to return. From the mood aboard, it seemed as though none were content with the situation. This was only exacerbated when the inevitable question of who should take command arose.

A discordant crew is a doomed one. As mighty as dragons are, it's only together that they can weather the worst Sornieth has to offer. The Wayward Pearl's last night saw the seas raging as though every one of the thousand currents howled for their missing deity.
Ametrine doesn't know the fate of her shipmates, sundered by the storm, but trusts that she was not the only one to survive. Although the Pearlcatcher does keep an ear out for those familiar names, she believes fixating on the past is like diving into a whirlpool. Better to keep moving forward, vibrant and fierce.

Ametrine journeyed to Flotsam Town and scrutinised the ships docked there. The Pearlcatcher was stunned to recognise the Bellowing Kraken, a ship which the Wayward Pearl had had more than a few scraps with over the years.
It flew different colours to the ones Ametrine remembered. Had that old saltback Yersinia finally met her match?
Ametrine approached as dragons performed the usual business of resupplying, exchanging treasure and catching up. A Mirror she didn't recognise eyed her suspiciously. Ametrine didn't move any closer to not provoke him and continued to watch. Then she recognised an Obelisk by the name of Promise and called out.
"Hey! This used to be the Bellowing Kraken?"
"Aye? And who might you be?"
"Remember the Wayward Pearl?"

The two exchanged stories about their respective ships. How Wayward Pearl met her doom and Bellowing Kraken's change of captain and name. Once Promise had the measure of the Pearlcatcher, she introduced Ametrine to the captain of what was now known as the Duelling Marlin. Not long after that, Ametrine had found a new crew to call home.

There was a time rumour had it that Ametrine concealed the artefacts she found in a sanctum. However, the sect that sought to take advantage of this learnt that such rumours were linked on purpose and found a pirate ambush waiting.

Ametrine stands diametrically opposed to Veiled Phoenix. Though both battle with eldritch incursions, Veiled Phoenix take any opportunity they have of expanding their knowledge, including studying the very artifacts Ametrine abhors.
