Ayaka's life began very quickly.

His mother laid a clutch of eggs at the beginning of the day, at the Northernmost tip of the Southern Icefield. Within seconds, a group of Snatchers stole his egg from his nest and flew him further north across the sea, to be sold as a slave to the Arcanist. In a mad stroke of luck (or perhaps a last minute blessing from the Icewarden), a vicious ice storm blew his captors east into the Windswept Plateau. There, all before the end of the day, his kidnappers were attacked by a traveling band of traders. They knew the true value of an Ice egg and knew it would be wasted sold to the Arcanist.

The traders carried him as fast as they could to the Sea of a Thousand Currents, hoping to get him on a boat to a Northern trade city before he hatched -- but Ayaka had never, ever in his very short life been late. As they were flying across the beaches, he hatched; his first ever action as a newborn dragon was to escape from their brown leather bag.

He quickly fell into the clutches of a warm and kind Tundra female named Vanilla. She took him back to her clan in the Shifting Expanse, a small trading outpost with a good bit of notoriety in their region. There were so many interesting dragons there, from the small and wicked sharp High Counsellor Ombrenotturne to the massive, scarred (with gems!) white pirate, Kiril who, if you can believe it, now knits.

It was a few months later that he met Flail. By then, he had grown into the rowdy, irreverent arse he is now. And meeting a Valkyrie, let alone a Valkyrie of House Swiftclaw -- the oldest Valkyrie and the oldest dragon in Saibhreas -- now that was a moment he will never, ever forget.

Lucky him he's the only one who can give her eggs now, huh?

Not to sound disrespectful. He's not a homewrecker -- he actually really likes Flail's true mate. He always has an interesting story to tell, and he knows what herbs can make a dragon hallucinate or get drunk faster than Maren wine could. Since he could never replace Mace's place as Valkyrie's consort, he's happy to spend most of his time exploring the surrounding environment. That's how he met his familiar and his pet frog.

He may not have started life in a very lucky place, but he knows what he's got going now is too good to pass up.
On the 27th day of August, Ayaka expected the two eggs he sired with Flail to hatch once again without commotion. It was only the second nest he had laid with her, and in typical Flail fashion, she had left him to mind the eggs the whole five days. Usually dragons did shifts with their mate, but that's Flail for you.

But this time was different... when the first egg hatched, it was a slick dark brown girl. Healthy, well formed, eyes closed, all normal. He watched the second egg hatch, and out popped his first son! Maybe he's quite old fashioned, but he was excited to finally have a son. Life is lonely when your mate mostly ignores you to mind the trainees at the Saibhreas Battle Academy. Sometimes you just wanna kick it with the guys, maybe drink mead and play dragonball with your son, y'know? Guy stuff.

Lost in thought and love for his new kids, he almost missed the moment when his third daughter opened her eyes. He caught a glimpse of searing blue before she sneezed.

And immediately the room exploded with a burst of balled lightning.

Of course that was when Flail actually started paying attention to their kids, now that one of them was powerful enough to make a bid for Cain's throne. She saw power in being the ruling family, even if it was her daughter who was actually the leader.

So yeah. No one really pays attention to Ayaka, still. But he spends most of his days languishing in the Swiftclaw mansion, so perhaps he can instill some kindness and humility in both kids before they grow up and get too ornery. Especially if one of them is actually going to be Chief Magistrate one day.
