Biography
The Blessed One - House Swiftclaw
|
Aaruhi was born blessed. Any dragon hatched during a festival is said to be marked by that god, and she had hatched on the first day of Flameforgers', with wings that gleamed like fire itself. And when she had opened her eyes, she revealed her true luck -- she had been blessed by Stormcatcher too, with eyes that burned with lightning. Her proficiency in magic expanded quickly, past what could be taught to her by the instructors at the Saibhreas Battle Academy. Her power seemed limitless, capable of great force and delicate nuance. She could drop a single gryphon in a flock with one lightning strike, and set a whole forest ablaze with another. And she hated it. Trained from birth. Constantly on guard. Alone. The other houses of Saibhreas hated her, expected her to take the Magistrate's throne. Her brother left too, and the townspeople bowed to her when she walked by. It sickened her, their treatment of her. She wasn't the savior they expected her to be. She was just Aaruhi. She never had a childhood, just what was chosen for her by her mother, Flail. Her bloodthirsty mother, who wanted to take the throne of Saibhreas for House Swiftclaw, and begin "uniting" -- conquering -- the surrounding cities. She would have all of Sornieth in her grasp, and Aaruhi was the perfect weapon for such a slaughter. That's all she was. A means to an end. Whenever Aaruhi could, she wandered the grounds of the Swiftclaw mansion. As the oldest founding family, they possessed greater wealth than the other three houses. She often found herself wondering what the point was in having so much when it couldn't be shared with your friends, but Aaruhi didn't have friends, so it was a pointless thought. She knew that the other heir, Cain's son, avoided the Firstblood family estate like the plague, preferring to stay confined in a nearby cave system. Even though the two of them were of the same noble status, it was laughable how different their lives were. Scion was also a mage -- supposedly he was also a lightning mage. Aaruhi doubted that he had ever cast lightning magic in public. Rumor had it he was a necromancer, and that he stayed in his cave all day to learn dark magic and curses. In contrast, Aaruhi was barely allowed outside the grounds except to hunt and train with her mother, or to "appear" to the public to garner their support for her succession. It was pointless, anyway. No one wanted Scion on the throne. He was blind, and evil, and totally uninterested in the affairs of Saibhreas. But Cain was still searching for another heir, nest after nest, and rumor had it this had put a strain on his union with Ombrenotturne. The townspeople knew pretty soon he would either have to produce an heir who actually wanted to take his place or abdicate to Aaruhi. Of course, not wanting the throne was not an option for Aaruhi, so instead, she wanders the grounds, pretending she was anonymous, just another imperial exploring the countryside. Perhaps she should have expected that Scion would want to see her in person soon enough -- no doubt to size her up -- but lost in thought on her evening walk, she didn't hear his approach. She felt a chill down her spine and shivered, thinking of returning to her rooms instead of continuing on her walk. When she lifted a considering glance backwards, she saw him. He was so much larger than spirals typically were - probably because his father was a particularly huge ridgeback -- and his dark scales shined in the twilight. He held a dark wood staff in one clawed hand and tilted his head, his luminous, blank eyes staring. Despite the pounding in her heart, Aaruhi stood firm. "You're not supposed to be here," she said, voice a little shaky. "I am usually where I am not permitted," he replied. His voice was smoother than she thought it would be; it was warm and deep, and despite his bland expression carried a hint of a smile. "What's the Blessed One doing skipping her training?" "I'm finished for the day," she said indignantly. "Had a look, then? Curiosity satisfied? This is what the Blessed One does in her free time. Nothing interesting. Sorry to disappoint." "I'm not disappointed," Scion said, and he seemed perturbed. "I -- The outdoors are nice." "Are they? How would you know, stuck in your caves all day?" "I'm blind." Aaruhi flushed, thankful it was dark out. "I know that." "Then you know I don't need the light to enjoy my surroundings," he said, and now he was definitely amused. "You're different than I expected." Her lips twisted. "They all say that eventually." Scion said nothing. She wanted to turn around and return home, but she couldn't resist asking -- "What did you expect?" "More arrogance, maybe. Certainly a lot happier. And..." he trailed off for a second, one claw tracing the grain of his wooden staff. "I didn't expect you to be alone... that's why I allowed you to see me." "I prefer to be alone." "As do I." A beat passed, then two. The silence stretched between them, but to Aaruhi's surprise, it wasn't awkward. Just comfortable. "Join me?" she asked. "Lead the way." |
