The figure of a stag Ombrenotturne carries on his person is not merely a traveler's trinket. It is the last remaining artifact from his home tribe. In the night, coal-black Wildclaws stormed through the peaceful settlement of Faes and destroyed every last living thing. Ombrenotturne, an egg at the time, was knocked carelessly into the water, where he remained until his hatchday two days later. His first image of dragonhood was one of cruel carnage, and it remains in the back of his mind even today.

After weeks of lonely travel, Ombrenotturne joined Clan Saibhreas a few days after Cain was elected leader and a few days before they left for the Shifting Expanse. In the days prior to their journey, he was appalled at the experience and common sense (in his opinion) the Chieftain lacked, and he said so repeatedly.

Eventually Cain took him aside and formally asked him to be Advisor-to-the-Chief. If Ombrenotturne wanted to challenge his authority, he could do it through the proper channels, and give Cain enough warning to make amends.

After a week in the Shifting Expanse, Ombrenotturne realized that sometime during the grueling travel, he and Cain had become close friends. Cain had proven himself to be a passionate, dedicated leader, and Ombrenotturne had saved many a hatchling with his quick reflexes and discerning eye. They had grown to rely on one another completely, and that trust soon evolved to something more--when Cain asked him to dinner, Ombrenotturne couldn't refuse him.

They keep their work and relationship separate--they pull no punches--but at the end of each day, they're stronger for it.

[Excerpt] Account of the journey to the Shifting Expanse

"Oh, not everyone is leaving," Ombrenotturne said, chuckling softly. "Our clan head will part ways with us tomorrow." He nodded toward a grizzled brown Skydancer and a hyperactive purple Spiral. "He laid one last clutch of eggs with Aiofe. She'll take some hatchlings and he'll take the rest; hopefully they'll find a Deity to serve before too long." He looked back toward the Ridgeback with something like fondness in his eyes. "Cain will inherit the mantle of Clan head."

I watched him corral a feisty brown Skydancer girl and her mate, snapping with glee at the hatchlings twirling around his feet.

"I know what you're thinking," Ombrenotturne said, a smile in his words. "He doesn't seem much like a leader. But he's incredibly brave. One day he'll be wise, and one day he'll think before he acts."

He leapt into flight, his unusually blue wings glinting. "Until then, he has me." Before he departed, he called to me, "Visit us in the Expanse, if you find yourself there on your travels."

Ombrenotturne is now, to his own horror, old. Not quite as old as the oldest line of Valkyries in Clan Saibhreas (he's beginning to think that Mace and Flail are literally immortal), but still, much older than he thought he would be. When he thinks back to how rough his lot in life was, and how lucky he was to find Cain, it brings him nearly to tears. To think that the best memories he has only happened because of chance and luck!

He's old enough now to have seen Clan Saibhreas grow from a small group of misfits to a larger one, with a dedicated healer and fisher and even a weaver! Somehow this tiny troupe had grown in repute and riches enough to be a minor power in their little corner of the Shifting Expanse. They now had established trade routes and regular customers for their goods. They had two more Valkyrie lines and more hatchlings and more new parents every day.

He's not even close to tired yet. Maybe Cain is ready to find his heir and laze about doing nothing, but Ombrenotturne will not be joining him just yet.

Well, maybe a vacation or two. It's been so long since they had any quality time! But after that, it's back to business.
