“You’re a dancer, aren’t you?” Carina meets him in the refugee camp, an artisan from one of the other clans. There aren’t many of her own people left. His proposal scares her, and she wants to tell him you’ve got the wrong person, I can’t do that, but. There is a hint of the wild in his eyes, the unhinged, and something in her responds to it. Maybe she is that person. The team he puts together is small, just five of them. They sneak into Rasma under the cover of the long dark - and isn’t that a shock, to realise that the world has spun as usual while hers collapsed, that it was almost a year ago that she danced at the Anastasi Gala celebrations for the last time. They took that from me, she thinks, and creeps past the corpses of her clanmates, laid out like gruesome statues. Snow begins to fall as they work, muffling the sound of footsteps scuffing over the ice. Carina feels like she’s watching her body from a distance. It’s a slow process; the Rasma may be brutal, but they are not stupid. She slinks through the streets of the conquerors’ city, sending word back to the town square when she finds what she’s looking for. The veil of the long dark is a blessing. Few civilians are awake at this hour, and the Rasma are arrogant enough not to post guards within their walls. |

The work is nearly finished by the time she returns to the square. Her heartbeat falters at the sight of it, but she forces her eyes away, waiting instead on anxious feet for them to be done. Something is beginning to move in the periphery of her vision when they finally flee the city. They don’t speak as they race across the tundra. There is no celebrating what they have done. Carina’s breath is coming in little puffs, but she keeps running, knows better than to turn back. It isn’t until they’ve paused for rest, on a rocky outcrop far from the city, that she dares a glance over her shoulder. The snow has grown heavier, winds picking up. There is nothing but white behind them, and she’s about to force herself away, cajole the others into continuing their trek, when she sees it. A blaze of orange, nothing more than a blur at this distance, but she can imagine the strength of the fire. Enough to raze a stone city to the ground. (“She was my friend,” Carina says. He wedges a shoulder under the corpse, getting leverage to lift, and replies, “She’ll understand.”) When the gaolers come for Carina, they call her Kingmaker. |
