“You aren’t going to get anywhere like that.” Took has been out on the plains for hours now, where it’s stiflingly hot despite the dark clouds overhead, and he doesn’t have the energy to do more than blink in surprise when he turns his head and spots the raptorik. She’s perched on a tree branch above him, watching his attempts with disdain. And she’s right, unfortunately. The dry grass is littered with his failed attempts to lure one of the lounging lionsnakes away from their pride: choice bits of meat he’d bought just for this, and then his own fish lunch as he got more desperate. Nonetheless: “It could still work.” “It won’t.” She watches him for a long moment. “We don’t take kindly to poaching here.” “I’m not poaching! Look - sleeping powder.” “And what could you possibly want with a sleeping lionsnake?” “Venom.” “Venom,” she repeats. |
“Lionsnake venom is rumoured to be useful in treating a variety of tropical diseases. I want to find out if that’s true.” “So every time you need more, you’ll come out here with some meat.” “Well…” He hadn’t thought of that. “I hadn’t thought of that.” She mutters something rather unkind, and takes off from the tree branch. Took’s resigned himself to a few more hours in the heat, unwilling to give up yet, when he spots movement amongst the lionsnakes. The raptorik lands right in the middle of them, ignoring their hisses, and grabs something from the grass. He knows his jaw is hanging open, but he can’t help it. Raptorik are not that big. She could’ve been lunch. A gnawed-on bone thumps to the ground before him a moment later, and she settles back on her branch. “Lionsnake cubs chew on bones to practice releasing their venom,” she says. “It gets caught in the tissue.” Took brightens, picking up the prize. He’s never tried to extract venom from an object before, but he’ll figure it out. “That was brilliant,” he tells her earnestly. “I know,” she says, and then: “My name’s Kruatak.” |
