Epimetheus Pandora's Plunder Mate:  |

Long, long ago Epimetheus hatched disfigured and scarred -- even more so after the surgery that removed the conjoined twin who hadn't survived his first breath. This and a run of bad luck created rumors that he was cursed, hated by the gods, a harbinger of misfortune -- that but for the grace of the gods in making him a tundra, he would have been born an Emperor. So when drought hit young Epimetheus' home, his community turned to him as a scapegoat, encouraged along by a charismatic new priest who insisted that he could cast out the community's misfortune if they would only let him cast out Epimetheus. Not even his parents defended him. Nor did he speak up against his own persecution: he had long since come to believe in his own monstrosity. The priests performed a ritual that would supposedly lay all of the community's sins, all of their bad luck, upon Epimetheus, to be removed from the community when he was. And then they sent him into the depths of the earth to die. But he didn't die; actually, although he didn't know it, he outlived the community that had ostracized him. As they withered and scattered above, he found a rich cave system full of subterranean life -- and he found peace, living there with creatures too blind to see how hideous he was. How long did he spend there before Pandora stumbled across him? Years, decades, centuries? He couldn't say; time passed unmarked. Long enough for the temple above to become a ruin. He didn't particularly want to return to the surface -- not until he fell in love with Pandora. Though she also enjoyed subterranean life, she convinced him to at least visit the surface on occasion. It helped that she brought the news of the settlement above's dissolution: all this time, he had believed himself to be doing his duty, keeping misfortune away from the community, by bearing their sins away into the dark. But if they were gone, who was he protecting? Now he devotes most of his time to his family, raising his and Pandora's children in his underground home. If he's still shy and quiet, still sensitive about his appearance and prone to wear heavy cloaks and hide in darkness, Pandora understands -- the habits of such a life cannot be shed easily. But she loves him as he is, warts and all. |
