Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Aneiralyss

Despite being the offspring of a chaos lord and the first mate on a vampire's pirate ship, Aneiralyss is remarkably sane. By all accounts she should be infinitely more eccentric than she is, but of all the pirates I've ever known, she's always been the voice of reason, the capable underling that somehow garners wide-spread respect.

Aneiralyss is usually the first face other dragons see when doing business with The Ichor. She's more palatable than Sargent and knowledgeable enough about the ship's operations that no one questions her. It's also worth mentioning that for many years before becoming a pirate, Aneiralyss moved out to the Sea of a Thousand Currents and worked at the docks there, hopping aboard merchant vessels going from port to port and making connections that still hold up to this day. That may be yet another reason why Sargent has her dealing with most of their clientele.

For someone so widely regarded among the seafaring (and now, skyfaring) trading circles, it would have been fairly easy for Aneiralyss to gain a crew and a ship of her own. However, she's always preferred someone else calling the shots. Having the big decisions being made by another dragon in advance is where she works best, carrying out orders with near-pinpoint accuracy. Quite honestly, after she left Chiaroscuro for the first time in her adolescent years, I thought I'd never see her again outside of the occasional visit during the elemental festivals to see her family. She was so busy all the time, going out to see the world, letting dragons she'd never met guide her through life.

Imagine my surprise, then, when Tweedledee and Tweedledum came home on The Ichor one day with Aneiralyss in tow, ecstatic at the idea that she was going to be traveling with them for the foreseeable future. Not long after, Sargent made her first mate, and the rest is history. Now she and Saoirse are the ship's main links with the outside world.

One thing about Aneiralyss that has always delighted me is her love of writing poetry. When she's off the clock and comes to the nightly bonfires, she'll sit with some of our other more artsy residents and read what she's written aloud. She's taken many lovers over the years and had dragons she fancies greatly, but has never gone so far as to stay with any of them on account of her job. As a result, however, they live on in her poetry, a fleeting reminder of a sweet tang amidst the saltiness of the sea and the bitter sting of the wind. A passage of hers that I'm particularly partial to reads:

"The sails of the day
Took me away
Even though part of me wanted to stay

But when I started to pray
The Gods could only say
That were I to linger my soul would fray

So while we never had enough time to play
You'll stay molded to my heart like mutable clay"

I have no idea who this is about, but I'd like to meet them someday. I wonder what their reaction to being compared to clay would be. Maybe within the twists and turns that the pirate life brings, someday there will be someone who is willing to navigate that adventure alongside her.
