Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Tweedledee and Tweedledum

The twins would be furious if I separated them even in my notes, so I must speak of them together. Imagining one existing without the other is a horrifying concept anyway and not an acceptable reality as far as I'm concerned.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum are quite possibly the most interesting dragons in Chiaroscuro, and that's not a statement I make lightly. They have been here a long, long time, and have somehow managed to insert themselves into almost every Chiaroscurian's lives in one way or another. They are even nosier than I am, and they're better at finding out things than I am! How do they pull that off, huh?

Before The Ichor became a more permanent fixture in the clan, the twins lived in The Withered Village, and their never-ending shenanigans gave them the still-used nickname of "Chaos Lords," which they are so fond of they even use it when introducing themselves to others. They are always together. Always. Seeing only one twin out and about is cause for immediate concern, since it means something bad has happened or something that will disturb the peace is about to happen. The only times they are not with each other, they are alone with their mates, and that was a battle hard-fought for both of them.

To sum that particular aspect of their lives up, the twins share everything. A den, food, clothes, crazy experiences, friends, you name it. But as much as they love each other, they wanted to find romantic love as well. They went back and forth with each other about this for a long time, with both of them being on both sides of the issue at different times. They even brought me in to mediate once, but all I ended up doing was watching in fascination (and slight incredulousness that they wanted me to be involved in such an intimate issue).

In the end, they made the decision to leave Chiaroscuro for a year, separately, making sure they would return to the exact place they left at the exact time of day they left. Whether they were successful in finding love or not, they would support each other no matter what, just like they always had. They sat at the edge of the clan's borders together working up the courage to leave for three days straight until I brought them both some more food and literally shoved them across the border. They fixed me with matching sheepish grins before getting one last good look at their mirror image and taking off in different directions.

The year they were gone was far too quiet of a time in Chiaroscuro. Everyone missed the daily pranks, the disruption of daily life, the minor explosions that occasionally ensue, and the in-jokes they have with almost every clan member. But I knew when they would return, so I was waiting at the border for them when they got back.

They both had another fae with them (and differently-colored two-headed skinks as well, which somehow I was not surprised by), but neither of them paid any attention to their brother's companions or the fact that I was standing right there. They hugged each other so tightly and for so long that it took me finally addressing their mates for them to break away from the bubble they'd created around themselves. Then, they actually hugged me, burying themselves into the junctions where my neck meets my shoulders, their tiny wings still brushing each other as a reminder to the other that they were home.

"You're better at showing the newbies around," they murmured in unison, which I correctly took to mean that they didn't plan to move for at least a few more minutes. So, I turned back towards my clan, gestured to their mates, and said,

"You're clearly sticking around if you've fallen in love with these two heathens, so whataya say we get you acquainted with the place?"

(I walked back into the main hub of my home that day with our Chaos Lords hanging off my neck and two strangers at my side, and I am very certain no one who saw me will ever forget that particular image)

The twins settled back into life, Akeno and Dalykris at their sides, and while the changes in them were small, there was no denying they were there. Even today, decades later, it's clear that their time away from each other helped them to stand on their own, even if they're still hardly ever apart. They are still beloved amongst the clan, their names are still cursed at high volume when they successfully disrupt someone's day, and their quirks have only intensified over time. They just have a couple of their own different quirks now.

And then they decided to become pirates. Because of course they did.
