Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Reid

Reid's life has gone through so many crazy ups and downs that it would be impossible for me to list them all here in the kind of detail they deserve. For a fairly young dragon, she's seen more of the world than most other dragons could even fathom.

And it all started with a storybook.

Reid was the first abandoned egg I ever found (I say that like I've seen a lot, but the truth is it's definitely less than ten). Of all those eggs, however, Reid's was the only one that didn't look like it was abandoned on purpose. There were clear signs of a scuffle, and enough blood in the immediate area to indicate some sort of fight had successfully gone down. Reid's egg lay lopsided in a ratty satchel, right next to a book of fairytales and a few meager provisions.

And when that egg hatched two months later to reveal one very tiny nocturne, that book was the first thing she latched onto. I lost count of the number of times I caught her walking around as a child with her nose in it. It's worn so ragged by now I'm surprised no pages have fallen out. She was always obsessed with adventure and grand epics and curses and tales of love and hate and heroism. Her stacks of novels probably rival Keiro in size, and I guarantee she's memorized the titles of all of them. She went to university at the best the Promenade had to offer, and she was in school for the better part of two decades. Academically, she's more accomplished than anyone else in Chiaroscuro by a fair margin (perhaps barring Impulse, who undoubtedly knows just as many things based on his job alone, or Ren, with his photographic memory and intense drive to know all that he can for the sole purpose of revenge against his enemies).

As fulfilling as the pursuits of academia seemed in her younger years, however, it became clear by the time she was nearing another turning point in her life that it was not enough. Reid knew all about the wonders of the world, but only through the safety of a comfortable place to sit and words on a page. The stories had sparked the drive inside her, and she went out into the world with very little warning not even five years after she'd completed her schooling.

She would return home with her own stories every few years, giving the tourists quite a show when she really delved deep into explaining the intricacies of how one fae defeated the mightiest roc in the Shattered Plain or how all of the electrical power in the lightning realm could have severe continental consequences if it were to be released. Nothing was too mundane for Reid; she wanted to experience it all.

And then, for a long time, she just... stopped coming back. Quite frankly, I assumed the worst. Her book stacks grew permanently dusty, the treasures she'd left behind from her adventures never saw the light of day again, and her friends started speaking of her in the past tense, slowly relinquishing any hope of her return.

One can only imagine my surprise when I saw her float back into Chiaroscuro on the deck of a pirate airship (I blame her entirely for the twins getting into the pirate life as well).

In her many years away, she'd been permanently cursed, scarred, and traumatized, but when she glided down from the ship for the first time, she was happier than I'd ever seen her. She had "the look" one gets when they've seen things that can never be unseen, but she was still our Reid, ready for the next voyage into the unknown after she'd stayed and shared her stories with us for a while.

The first thing she told me at the nightly bonfires was that getting cursed was like having a limb torn off and then having it affixed to your body again with glue. "It's hard to feel like you're completely whole, even if all the pieces are there." That's kind of how Chiaroscuro feels when Reid is away. The puzzle's not quite done until she's back in our corner of the world to add another tale to the books.
