Biography
How amusing, to be a half-vampire born under The Sun. Aside from this small irony, there was little remarkable about Leicester's birth. As the inhabitants of the Windswept Plateau finished cleaning up the remnants of that year's Mistral Jamboree, under the Seed Moon, the latest nests of the Witchborne hatched in peace and quiet. Their training began as soon as the hatchlings were able to comprehend it. The work of the Witchborne is never done, so best to get an early start. Of course, those born under the Seed Moon bear a greater burden than others of their kind; they are those born with patient dispositions and minds capable of holding vast knowledge. The Witchborne must keep up their numbers in order to survive, and the newest generations need teachers, and someone must keep the peace with the outsiders. This was Leicester's life for quite a time. That's not to say he resented it; as a matter of fact he rather much enjoyed his work. The card drawn upon his birth was The Sun, the symbol of knowledge and happiness, and how true that prediction was the Witchborne would remark. Leicester was always seen as kind and positive, the dragon who knew everything and would be more than happy to share that knowledge to whomever asked. Most would never have guessed his vampiric lineage if not for his dark eyes and over-pronounced fangs. Such a nice boy, too sweet to be a dark thing, just what a 'good' witch should be; these were the type of remarks the peoples of the Zephyr Steppes tended to make about him. Leicester is modest and content with his life. Or, he was, but in time the deep-seated instincts of his Element rose to the surface. That primordial urge to wander and to learn instilled by the Windsinger into his children so many generations prior. Leicester tamped down this desire. I still have so much to learn about being Witchborne, he'd think. My people are relying on me, he'd tell himself. For a time this mantra largely succeeded in helping him to return to his contented state. Until the rumors began to reach the Steppes, the rumors of dark magic brewing in the north amongst the plains of Dragonhome. Nothing concrete but substantial enough claims to spark the Witchborne's concerns. Leicester secured for himself a place in the party sent to investigate these rumors. He said it was to gain more knowledge, to further his education and practice his skills. He hoped it would be enough to quell his wanderlust. Long days and long nights the party spent traveling and later investigating. Dragonhome seemed a quiet and empty place to Leicester. Aside from the abandoned ruins of the Cairnstone Rest and the sprawling marketplace in the canyon where the Greatwrym's Breach met the Pillar of the World, he found almost nothing of interest. He was stopped for a short meal in a cafe at the marketplace when he first saw Her. Initially, Leicester mistook her for a fellow Witchborne. She had the look, and the air of magic about her, but something seemed amiss. He watched her from across the cafe, happily chatting with the manager like old friends before slipping into a back room with one of the servers. She was concealing something, Leicester realized, some sort of package. For several days he tailed her. Right up until the moment he found himself confronted, boxed into an alley off the marketplace. The finely-dressed Pearlcatcher spoke, voice airy and polite in an almost old-fashioned manner. "You know, there are easier ways to fetch a woman's attention, good sir. If you'll forgive my forwardness, please call me Dandy. And if you do not mind my asking, might I know why you have developed so sudden an interest in me?" For a moment, Leicester was stunned speechless. Up close, the she-dragon was positively stunning, with stars glinting in her mane and impeccable outfit combining into an aura of nobility, no - regality. But he shook himself of those thoughts quickly and refocused on the task at hand. He was a Witchborne, and darkness clung to this dragon. "I am Leicester of the Witchborne. I've come to investigate a series of rumors regarding dark magics in this part of the world. And here I find you, with an aura of magic and smuggling secret packages. Naturally, I'm inclined to see you as suspicious." Dandy laughed softly at that. "Oh dear, we seem to have started off on quite the wrong foot indeed. Please, allow me to explain. You are right in that I have magic, quite dark magic in fact. But I have no intention of using my abilities for anything but good, I can swear to you sir Withcborne! I came to Dragonhome to meet with an old, dear friend of mine. Her name is Szagua. There are members of her clan that are much like myself, you see, and I came to visit in the hopes of sharing knowledge with them. Somewhere along the way I became part of one sir Sem'yoel's side business - do you know the Cavernous Cafe? The owner's mate, Sem'yoel, deals in magical artifacts and spells and has set up in the back of the store. I've been bringing him his deliveries. Lady Val'tiner becomes quite cross when he shirks his cafe work!" Again was Leicester stunned by this dragon. Never in his life had he met someone like her. She spoke like something out of a fairy tale, like a court noble, and held herself like a queen, yet he could make out the edges of something very dangerous lurking just underneath the surface. He found himself wanting, no, desperate to learn more about this... Dandy. Leicester had never known what it felt like to be in love, so he did not realize he was hurtling head first into it with this strange, extraordinary dragon. "I am sure you have many questions for me, sir... Leicester, was it? Tis quite an engaged tale. The kind best discussed over a cup or two of tea. Might I impose myself on you for a while longer and ask for your accompaniment to the Cavernous Cafe?" Leicester only nodded mutely, faced etched in open awe, as Dandy began to move back towards the bustle of the market, twirling her bejeweled cane thoughtfully. "Ah, perhaps I should ask the lady Val'tiner to call for Tr'laeg and Ares, they are the others like me I mentioned a few minutes ago, sir Leicester. Tr'laeg is more a teacher than I, she would likely explain things better!" Leicester walked alongside Dandy to the cafe, silent as she casually chattered away, stepping into a new chapter of his life. |
