Gen 18
“ It is immature and cowardly for one to say you cannot bear what your fate requires you to bear. So bear it I must, that is my duty.”
Thread-thin cracks abruptly surfaced across an egg under the Seed Moon; its parents scrambled to retrieve tarot cards as per tradition for all Witchborne hatchlings. And as the hatchling crawled out of the confines of his shell, a card tumbled down from his father's claws landing directly in front of the newly-hatched pearlcatcher.

"Knight of Cups-reversed." A voice softly announced, edged with a hint of worry. The hatchling innocently looked up at the elder dragon, his father, unaware of the card's meaning. Another voice, feminine and mellow, chimed in, "He'll find his way, I know he will." His mother lowered her head, and he curiously bumped his against it. She hums something softly as she gently nuzzles him.

"Xiang." She whispers, " May your path lead you to a bright future."

Two young Skydancers sat side by side, delicate filigree painting their dark starry forms. They were in a study of sorts; tomes, dissertations and the like lined the shelves, covering nearly half the room, the other half occupied by tables decorated with talismans and potions and tools for making such. One of the younglings eyes their sibling nervously before redirecting their gaze to the Pearlcatcher standing before them, yet to talk since entering the room, opting instead to read the letter they had given him.

Without looking up from the paper, he speaks, "So, you two are the trainees The Mistress has sent, Sol and Fir, yes?" The one named Sol affirms. "Very well", Xiang sets the letter on the nearest table and faces them. It was the first time the younglings had a proper look at their would-be mentor's face since they arrived. He appeared much younger than his demeanour would lead them to believe. Inadvertently, Fir looked him in the eye, causing Xiang to avert his gaze quickly.

"Before we begin, there are things that must be laid out if we are to work together cordially. One, I expect nothing but open honesty from you, and you are to expect the same from me. Two, I will be completely unaware of an issue unless you tell me. Three, do not feel as if I'm not paying attention even if I don't make eye contact when you speak. Have I made myself clear?"

"Y-yes!"

"Good, you may retire to your rooms. We begin lessons at eight in the morning sharp." With that, Xiang promptly exits the study. Later, when the younglings were at their dorm, Fir tells Sol how, for a moment, they thought they saw spectral chains wrapping their mentor's form as he passed by them, flickering briefly in and out of existence like dying candlelight.

KNIGHT OF CUPS- REVERSED
PRyH9lP.png
More often than not, those that did hatch under the Seed Moon become teachers of the Way and as such, Witchborne trainees are left under their care and tutelage; their older kin comforted by the knowledge that Seed Moon Witchborne are the nurturing sort. Xiang is...not one of them. Yes, a Witchborne mentor, but that is not his primary role- Xiang is an investigator for magic-related incidents within the trading town of Salkhi's Outpost, from a child-eater to tax evasion.

Despite his status as an official investigator for the Salkhi Gaurd Department, he would rather study arcana than deal with his duties; a point of frustration within the department as they try to coax Xiang out of his office. Nevertheless, when he is on the field, his peers can count on him as a reliable and formidable asset in no small part to his multiple capacities. And it’s because of his credentials that the Witchborne has decided to bestow the mentor role upon him, a role that Xiang has no particular interest in, but one he is obligated to accept.

That is not to say that Xiang has no power over the decision at all. He has made it clear that he would only comply if they agreed on several conditions. Such as the restriction of how many students he takes in order to cope with social interaction. However, with all that’s said and done, he turned out to be a surprisingly decent teacher, if one with a perfectionist streak. Witchborne initiates return to their clans with their skills increased tenfold if exhausted from dealing with their mentor's eccentricities.

Even as a hatchling, Xiang displayed a natural gift and acumen for the magic arts, especially for transmutation; a skill that his Nightcaller heritage seems to have strengthened. Despite his gifts, however, the young Xiang would be better known for his aloofness. Always finding difficulty in talking to others, much less making friends and even more so with his strange mannerisms and intense fixation with magic academia.

And when Witchborne training promptly commenced when he and his brothers were old enough, Xiang took to his studies with feverish dedication. Soon he outstripped his fellow trainees in magic arts proficiency, going so far as to even practice spells and incantations beyond their level. But despite his accomplishments, what drives him to such heights was a mystery, perhaps even to Xiang himself. Some speculate that it was out of restlessness or frustration, but despite prodding from his family, they never knew the answer to his behaviour.

As the case may be, many of his relatives reside within his birth clan, nearly every one of them an accomplished caster and/or duelist. Maybe he wants to escape the great shadow they cast? Who knows? Only time can reveal all mysteries that lie hidden away.

"You truly are studious, you will make a fine teacher to your kin one day..."

"You are of the most powerful family in Sornieth! Carry yourself better!"

"You were born a protector, how can you fulfil your duty if you refuse to consort with others."

He hated it. The way they looked at him with so many expectations. His lineages were the source of every praise or reprimand and more grating were the words about the so-called "fate" of those born under the Seed Moon. He wishes not to be a teacher of the way. Never. To be not defined by his bloodline, to be free of the burdens shouldered upon him soon as he was born- wishes and desires that always seemed beyond his control. And so he turned to what he could shape with his claws.

To him, magic was easier to understand than the wants of those around him. Thus, when the pressures of living up to the standards of many became too much, he withdrew himself further to recluse and deeper into his tomes. Such activity did not go unnoticed by his family. One Nightcaller relative gravely warned him about the price he might pay if he took his gifts for granted. Xiang is well aware of the family curse, but even so, he was madly curious about how far he could push himself and so in youthful folly, he ignored the warning.

Then it began.

His brothers jolted awake as Xiang woke up in cold sweat, screaming, his heart racing. His parents rushed into the room, and after some cajoling, he was back to sleep. Little did anyone know that it would get worse from there.

Such events became more frequent, more intense, more dangerous; manifestations of losing control- Mana within him surging out violently, looking for an outlet. He was given treatments: potions, spells, charms- all to no avail. Then one night, he woke up to everything around him in utter ruins, body cracking as molten, concentrated magic oozed out of him. It was time for something drastic.

He lay there, bound in seals, opposite his mother as she shuffled her tarot cards. The dense layer of a shielding spell stood between them. She takes one card out and presents it to him.

"Do you know what this one is?", she asks.

"The Knight of Cups, reversed", he replies.

She smiles gently, "The card indicates that difficult feelings in your heart can be released once they have been put into words. It is an ideal time to communicate about whatever you have been avoiding. Instead of retreating more, share what you are experiencing with people you trust. I know it's been very hard for you Xiang, but would you let us help you? "

He understood; but agreeing meant conceding control, perhaps for good. He was quiet for a long time. Then, for what seemed like an eternity: "Yes". It was soft, uncharacteristic of his usual stiff intonations. Sventura moves closer to her son, as close as the wall between them would allow. "Xiang, I'm proud of you, truly. We'll find a way, I promise."

A modified seal was prescribed, a limiter, they explained. Unsure they were of where the tipping point of Xiang's magic would be, the seal would suppress his capabilities while they evaluate his condition. From there, they would incrementally release the limiters until they arrived at the safe range. In time, the final model of the seal was established, and Xiang could comfortably practice magic again, though not to the same extent as he did in the past; the free reign over his abilities was over. The experience had left an indelible mark on him but perhaps a silver lining, the seal brought him more open about his situation, prompting a strive to learn how to communicate with others.

Soon, his baptism came and went, and so did his brothers in the few months after that. But Xiang was reluctant about leaving home, understandably so. Still, a deal was eventually struck, and Xiang was sent to Salkhi's Outpost.
odds-80x16.png

Though he dreaded it, he began his new life at the clan in earnest, and finally managed to settle into a routine that he was comfortable with; studying magic, lessons on social etiquette, attempting to assist the guard department and writing letters as he promised his family. His peers eventually grew accustomed to his personality as he did to them, and the trading town slowly began to feel like a home, one farther away from the expectations of his lineages.

And as he is aware, he never did escape his "fate"; finding himself nearly everything his family hoped he would be. But strangely, he no longer minds, content as he was. After all, he must accept that some things will always be beyond his control. Some may see it as conceding defeat but, what is defeat when one moves forward with grace and purpose?

The Dutiful Sisters
Idol.png

A heavily altered iteration of Xiang's seal and the origin of his epithet. Manifesting as spectral chains, they flicker into visibility once every while like dying candlelight. Recently, they have taken a glow strange and unearthly as if touched by some outer being.

Their conception began with their charge’s dissatisfaction with their original form. Through meticulous and concise transmutational processes, the modified seal could function in a symbiotic relationship with Xiang’s constant mana overflow, drawing from it and creating a more efficient and sustainable system. This allowed the reclamation of a fraction of their original power.

On the Chained Scholar's whim, however, the Dutiful Sisters can become vampiric in nature- maintaining a balanced and stable environment through self-reconfiguration of the symbiotic relationship. In this manner, Xiang can control the seal, which physically manifests as chains to drain or seal targets' mana and more to sustain itself, turning it into a powerful weapon.
