Biography

sBJOLEA.png

Uh-oh, looks like this flamboyantly pink boy wandered a little too far from his home lair (QueenOfMagic #508264), and now he's off to see the world! If you ever feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off to See the World' thread. If you don't want another traveler in return, you can also drop him off at the Traveling Dragon Rest Hub!
Koralo was content with his lot in life: he was a bartender in an inn and he enjoyed it. He was a practical dragon, his only sentimentality in the form of a necklace gifted to him by his parents when he grew to adulthood. He considered it a lucky charm of sorts. But one night when he was cleaning up at the end of a long shift, he realised it was missing! He searched high and low, but found nothing. He asked all of his patrons if they'd seen it, but they could provide him with only the smallest of hints: someone had seen a mysterious dragon leaving the bar with a necklace of similar description some hours ago.

Dismayed, Koralo realised he could either resign himself to never seeing his necklace again - let go of the only thing he treasured in the world - or he could leave his home on the trail of the mysterious thief to fight for what was his. Maybe he could have a few adventures along the way.

He decided to pluck up his courage and set out in search of his parents' necklace.

Koralo spent some time in the Zephyr Steppes searching for his necklace; he believed the thief had taken it to a quickly-growing clan. The clan's residents allowed him to make their home his base of operations while he searched for the thief and/or his necklace. Though he found no trace of either, he befriended a pair of kindly dragonesses, Kanna and Peiponi, and helped them start a family.

Koralo's search took him to Crow Callers. They told him that they had not seen his necklace, but offered him one that he could wear in the meantime.

Touched, he accepted.

Koralo took a (very brief) break from searching for his necklace when he came to the Sunbeam Lanternhouse: instead he teamed up with Yuzuki to resume his bartending duties for a night or two. He enjoyed swapping mixing techniques with her and trying a few new cocktail recipes.

Koralo heard about a magical garden where travelers could come and rest for awhile. Perhaps some other travelers would have heard something about a necklace. When he arrived, he was greeted by Axolotl, a white and pink skydancer who informed him he was the Caretaker of the Fount of Travelers, the magical garden he was visiting. Wandering around for anyone who might know anything, he encountered a food critic, a musician, and a flirty pearlcatcher, but no one that would know anything about thieves. Finally, when he returned to Axolotl, he explained his situation to the skydancer. After a moment of thought, Axolotl cleared his throat. "Perhaps you could find Dashe. He grew up in this clan and knows many a things about the underworld. He is even for hire. If anyone can help you find your necklace, he could. But I do not know where he is currently, I'm afraid. But whether or not you find Dashe, I sincerely hope you find your treasured necklace. If there's anything else we can do for you, please let me know." Koralo nodded and left, excited by the prospect of finding this spy to hire or another clue that led to his heirloom.

When Koralo reached Lanternlea Port, he wondered if he had any hope of finding the thief, or his necklace, or the spy, in the crowds of the town. The first step, of course, was finding a place to stay. A base of operations.

He found that with an inn called the Helianthus Haven. He got a simple, comfortable room and breakfast was included, so he had no complaints there. With a number of travelers staying in the place, it was easy to strike up conversations, and start asking questions. A couple of Fae reacted a little strangely - twitching their frills a lot, then quickly announcing that they needed to leave - when he asked if they knew anything about thieves or stolen goods, but they were Fae and maybe that was just a Fae thing.

He did manage a slight lead - there were definitely rumors of thieves and pickpockets operating in the area - but not much more. And then, to his surprise, he overheard the name Dashe while he was eating his evening meal, and a few minutes of eavesdropping confirmed the newcomer's identity.

But when Koralo approached him, asking for help finding his lost necklace, the Imperial tried to talk him out of it. "The theft happened when you were at home. Which was... where? Plague? Ice? What makes you think you'll find this necklace anywhere near here?" Koralo was persistent, though, and eventually Dashe relented and agreed to help, "to the best of my abilities." The condition, though, was that Koralo had to hang back and let Dashe work without interference; no questions, no pestering him, very few meetings.

The few meetings they did have were depressing. Dashe told him that unless there was something noteworthy about the setting or chain, the thief had probably pried the stone out and discarded the rest. "So my necklace is just gone?" Koralo had exclaimed in dismay.

"Depends on how you look at it. Is your necklace the stone? The pendant the stone is in? The chain it hangs on? Or the whole thing?"

Koralo was too upset to be philosophical about it that night; he went to bed early and moped. Maybe Dashe felt bad, because the next day, Koralo got a note suggesting they meet in the Huge Dining Hall.

The inn was designed for dragons of all sizes - there were tiny facilities for Fae and Veilspun, and at the other end of the spectrum, massive rooms and a massive dining hall for the Imperials, Guardians and Ridgebacks. And Koralo met one of each that day. Dashe had brought along a Ridgeback knight who said she could find lost objects, "sometimes, kind of," and an aging guardian who promised Koralo that if they caught the thief in his territory, they'd be brought to justice.

Koralo didn't understand the purpose of the meeting, at first, until the Ridgeback asked him for an object he'd worn close to his skin for some time. His newer necklace fit that description, so he offered it to her. She examined it, grimacing - "just metal? no stones in this one?" - but then she closed her eyes and he felt the faint buzzing sensation of magic being used. He couldn't help holding his breath, and couldn't take his eyes off her.

"Huh," she said, finally, sounding surprised. "It's... actually not far from here?"

"It's not?" Koralo said, at the same time that Dashe did. Dashe sounded almost as surprised as the knight had.

"I mean, I can't be sure - it'd be easier if I had another stone, or if we were looking for metal. Like calls to like. But I think it's close by."

"What else can you tell me?" Dashe asked, but Koralo was barely listening. He was closer than he'd ever thought possible!

Dashe, and the Guardian - Kousa - told him to sit tight while they investigated. "Could take a while," Dashe warned him. Koralo, feeling hopeful for the first time in ages, agreed readily; he'd been talking to the dining hall's head chef about the need for a competent bartender, so he'd have a job to occupy his time, and no worries about paying for his stay.

He was delighted when, a month later, Dashe came up to his bar holding a box. Inside was a gemstone he'd recognize anywhere; the tiny scratch on the front of it, the cloudy swirl at the top - and he excitedly assured Dashe he knew this was the one. No sign of the setting it had been in when his parents gave it to him, but he was prepared for that.

All he had to do now was find a jeweler to make the stone back into a necklace, and in a city like Lanternlea he had plenty of choices. He was able to keep working a steady job, doing what he'd always enjoyed, and save up money while he waited; eventually he decided on a pearly chainmaille design to match the necklace he'd received at Crow Callers.
