Afsoun

Uh-oh, looks like this unassuming hearth witch wandered a little too far from her home lair (sgkat, 158838), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

Sgkat would like this dragon to keep traveling and to one day return home.
- CelesticLeo (November 20220

Afsoun inherited a healthy measure of her father's magical ability... but not even a shred of his self-assurance. She spends much of her time alone, absorbed in tinkering with small practical spells for making everyday tasks, such as cleaning, easier. They're well-crafted little bits of magic, but when she's asked what they do, she gets flustered. Stammering her way through an explanation, she often does not present her ideas properly.

Reinier, with his own knack for creating inventorying spells, has tried to help her overcome her cripplingly low self-esteem so that her talents can be recognized as the brilliance they are, but all of his efforts have failed. Now he's encouraged her to go out into the world, hoping that she can overcome her insecurities and find her self-confidence.

Afsoun isn't thrilled with this plan, but she feels compelled to please her mentor.

There was no doubt about it, she was well and truly Lost. Not just the low grade sort of lost, the kind where you might have missed one marker, but could generally fuddle about until you found yourself again. No, this was the kind of Lost that deserved the capital L. How had she gotten so far from her intended course? What was her intended course, anyway? A dragon better equipped for the wilds would know what to do now, but Afsoun was far from equipped for the wilds.

Reasoning that one course was surely as good as another when she didn't know where in the Lightweaver's six domains she even was, Afsoun headed north. Weren't you supposed to head north when everything else had gone to the dogs? As she glided, a smell began to work its shy way toward her. It was small at first, but then grew in strength and soon overpowered even the troubling odors of decay and rot that clamored for her olfactory attention.

Safety. The smell said plainly. Home.

It thoroughly confused her, even as she followed the smell. How could she be smelling home out here in the Wandering Contagion? This was the farthest thing from safety, and nothing at all looked familiar in even the slightest way. Diving down in a tightening spiral in pursuit of the promising scents, Afsoun found herself in a large patch of ground that was somehow scrubby and slimy. Trying to keep her fur from being tangled or slimed was a bit of a chore, but the tundra took great care to do just that as she picked her way after the enticing smell.

Abruptly her path was blocked by something solid. Afsoun staggered backward, prepared to go around the boulder that she hadn't the slightest idea was there. Then the boulder moved. Afsoun would have bolted at that very moment save for the fact that this moving boulder was also the source of the smell that had led her here. "Home?" She asked, tilting her head and giving voice to a small trill as she reached out to prod the boulder. "Home?"

"Enough of that," the boulder remonstrated, glancing Afsoun's curious paw away. "Who are you then, to come sniffing around and-" the voice cut off and Afsoun found herself looking into the unsettling, crackly eyes of an old snapper who glared back at her for a moment. Something flickered in the snapper's eyes, though her gruff tone didn't change. "You'd best be careful, youngster. Poking around in places like this is apt to get you into trouble."

"I'm...I'm sorry, it's just that I smelled home and..."

"You'll have to learn to investigate things, not step right into the thick of them! You've potential, youngster, yes, potential lives in there. BUT! You must protect yourself and reach for it." Afsoun drooped, feeling defeated at the light scolding. "Come along with me and you'll learn a thing or two," the old snapper added, a wicked grin on her face. Uncertain, the young tundra hesitated, nostrils flaring as her heart told her this was home and safety, but the lesson fresh from this very dragon's mouth bade her warning.

"Where...where will you take me? You won't eat me, will you?" She asked at last, not advancing, but not retreating either. She practically bolted when the old snapper cackled in delight.

"Ah, a fast learner! No, child, your senses are true. Come along with me, love, and meet the rest of us outskirters. I think you'll find one of them to be of particular interest." Gingerly, Afsoun followed the snapper, somewhat bemused.

The introductions had been made over a dinner of dried grasses whose herbaceous smells nearly drowned out those of decay and rot that were kept at wing's length from this small sanctuary. Afsoun was astounded at her warm welcome among these dragons, and even more amazed at their tales and the frightening dragons that lived half a day's journey from their home.

"There is one of our number yet that you haven't met," Canyon, the snapper who had greeted her initially, mentioned casually. "He has been gathering and working his spells all day and has only since decided to see sense and rest." The affection in Canyon's voice rippled out to encircle Afsoun. As she looked up, a piece of the night sky seemed to descend and coalesce into
a tundra. Afsoun leaped up and careened toward the newcomer, a cry of delight leaving her. She'd never seen him before, but the smells that cloaked him as they did Canyon made her feel as though she were greeting a beloved one. For his part, the tundra roared joyfully, encircling her with a wing and headbutting her gently.

"Granddaughter," he said simply, grinning daffily over Afsoun's head at his mate, Canyon, who had come to join the triangle.

"Granddaughter?" Afsoun thought in shock. She never knew she had relatives so far away! It would explain why they smelled like home.

"You were only just a baby when we left the clan. We decided just as many older dragons do that it was time to travel and see the world a bit. We somehow landed here more permanently." explained a smiling Sadie who had walked over and stood by Canyon.

"It is so refreshing to see you out this way- but why are you out this way? Is something the matter?" asked Canyon concerned. Afsoun quickly explained the low self-esteem issue they had been having and why they were sent out this way. Her grandparents' faces looked at each other and then quickly back at her. With a glimmer in their eyes, they said in unison,

"We know just the dragon!" The pair quickly scrambled to mark a map with the location of the dragon who could help solve her issue. They packed the map with a few handmade goodies of treats and comfort items before sending Afsoun off.

"We love you and while you only just got here, there is someone you must go see quickly. His name is Heks and he lives in a bustling town called Andermorax. He's a part of a clan that specializes in diversity! Not only that but he's a counselor who works at an Inn that sees a bunch of travelers. You'll find your voice there. Please feel free to visit us anytime as we wait for your next arrival." said Sadie caringly as they handed Afsoun the bag of prepared goods. Frantic Afsoun quickly headed to the sky with a map this time. Hopefully, they won't get lost.

Afsoun wasn't totally surprised to notice the smell of home - she was in the Lightweaver's territory, after all. But she was still far from her birthplace, deliberately so. She wasn't trying to come crawling back home, not this soon, without even making any change in herself.

But she trusted her nose, and she began spiraling downward, following the scent, until she'd set down in the large landing area outside an inn surrounded by sunflowers. It was unmistakable, just like when she'd located her grandparents, and her nose led her though the inn door.

The Obelisk behind the check-in desk kindly explained the whole procedure of checking in - it didn't really help with Afsoun's embarrassment at flubbing the process, but it was less crushing than scorn would have been - and then spared her the terror of asking about the scent, by posing a question herself. "You know, we see a lot of travelers with markings like yours. Most of them Mirrors. By any chance, are you looking for family around here? Have a lot of relatives who travel?"

Afsoun stammered out an affirmative, and the Obelisk grinned. "Thought so! We've had three of your siblings here within the past week, and one's still here. Hey, Koumi!"

Koumi was a Pearlcatcher, very focused on learning to perfect the art of the smoothie, and while Afsoun didn't have much in common with her half-brother, it felt good to get to know him. And through him, she got to know many of the other inn employees; the head chef, Nasus, and his right-claw dragon, Aila; the housekeepers, Tabra and Ashera, and the bartender, Koralo.
