Nicneven

Nicneven was born in the Starwood Strand, as a hatching she used to lie awake at night and watch the stars between the myriad glittering blooms. She dreamed of mastering Arcane magic and one day joining the Arcanist in his tower.

Her initial training went well. She completed the beginner training almost overnight. And then nothing else worked. Nicneven grew increasingly humiliated and frustrated as her classmates caught up and then surpassed her. Her teacher pulled her aside to suggest she persue a different career path.

Nicneven begged him for one more chance. Her teacher agreed. She fought with every inch of her being, straining, the eyes lining her body wide open. Something gave - Colored light in a rainbow of hues flooded her eyes and blinded her. Around her were crashes and screams. She curled up, eyes closed until silence fell.

Opening her eyes she was still swamped by the light, with the figures of her teacher and the other students haloed in pink. Her ears worked just fine when she was told to gather her things and leave.

Frustrated, humiliated and confused she walked, randomly following paths of light until she realized she was in the Wandering Contagion, far from home and lost.

Tired and overcome by emotion Nicneven laid down and tried again to do what should have come naturally. Instead red light rose around her. Everywhere she went it was the same, she could use the strongest elemental power in the area but only in the smallest ways.

She kept trying, and kept failing, feeling a little more broken each time. Exhausted and miserable she gave up. Nicneven laid down on the shore of the Nameless sea to let the tide take her and fell into a deep sleep.

Waking she realized she was being carried on the back of a Guardian. She couldn't bring herself to care. Simnel took the exhausted mirror back to the floating Isle of Caecustoria. Slowly Nicneven's body healed and she began to care about life again, she made friends and sometimes even smiled.

She wasn't satisfied with the meager power she could command. But she grudgingly heeded Simnel's warning that pushing further would break her mind beyond repair. Instead she threw herself into saving other Sages as she had been saved. She became a Seeker.
