______ They called him a guardian.

They hailed the creature that lived in the bushes, whispering of it in awe and fear. They reveled at the scratches and pain upon their hides, procured from merely touching the beast. They feverishly recalled their own encounters, retelling them with fervent amazement in their eyes, ever exaggerating the strength and power of the mythical beast. One had never seen the plants of the Plaguelands grow so high, and so lush and healthy. Only the work of a truly dedicated master could hope to do such all on their own. It wasn’t even a quarantine zone, so it had to be the work of a guardian.

But guardians are not supposed to kill what they are meant to protect.

Like the shepherd tends to their flock, or the king to their subjects, the “guardian” tended to his plants. In some ways, he could be called a guardian. He kept them safe. But, that would be saying that kings and shepherds were stalwart guardians as well. Yes, they may protect for the most part, but every once in a while a shepherd must grow hungry. They pick the fattest, juiciest sheep from their herd, and make their meal. Sometimes, the power goes to the head of the king. They become greedy, taking more and more gold and beheading those that resist.

Duncan was no different.

It is rare for a Wind dragon such as himself to become so skilled at another magic. But Duncan made do. He practiced day and night since the day of his birth, slinking through the undergrowth and drinking from the most nutrient-rich of ponds. He procured jewels and amulets that would help him master the art of Nature magic, taking the good with the bad.

Duncan had his reasons for the things he did. Raised among the wild, left to fend for himself, Duncan adapted. He learned to manipulate the plants around him. Dressed himself with garbs proclaiming his alignment, covered his scales in hues of healthy green. As he grew better with Nature magic, his resistance to Plague lessened and lessened, until he was immensely weak to it. Duncan covered his paws as to protect his scales and his work from the filth of the Plaguelands. He had nothing against Plague dragons, but he could not let his work be tainted.

His living snares were his only way of procuring his favorite food.

______ Duncan is bigger than the average Spiral, but he still needed assistance when hunting. That was where his plants came in. Vines and spikes, blooming flowers and luscious fruits, those were all meant to lure and entrap unsuspecting dragons in his home. In a place where good green food was so, so scarce, Duncan created an oasis of death. He did not kill often, only when necessary. He’d store the bodies in giant flytraps, which secreted a liquid specially crafted for the sole purpose of storing bodies and keeping them fresh. Any who dare intrude upon his land were quickly ushered out with a flurry of swipes from Duncan’s tough claws, and a whip from his spiked tail to boot. He would not stand for anyone disturbing his peace and quiet, and his hearty meals.

Duncan was not one who advocated much for fun or enjoyment. The moral of the Plaguelands was that only the toughest may survive, and although Duncan’s scales were some of the toughest in the land, a strong mind and unbending will were also required. However, Duncan does busy himself with the idle work of herbalism. It is a useful skill that he can use to treat his wounds, and although he is loathe to admit it, the hobby does well to keep his sanity in check.

Sometimes Duncan muses upon the past, of things loved and lost. His parents. Having been the only egg in his clutch, Duncan had no siblings to build rapport with, and often kept to his parents’ heels before they inevitably went their separate ways. Sometimes Duncan ruminates and muses upon what might have been, what his life would be like had he refused to leave the presence of his elders. Would he still be a cannibal? Would he get more enjoyment out of life than he does now? Duncan may never know.

But lately, Duncan has not the time to dwell on the past. A black, inky and sickly smoke has begun to leak from his scales, leeching his strength from right out of his bones. Duncan knows all too well that it is not a result of the Plague sizzling his flesh. Sure, he has become affected by the Plague— he’s glowing now, which he is sure is not normal, but it’s not lethal. In an attempt to become versed only in Nature magic, Duncan had to push down his Wind magic. He drew strength from it and focused it into his Nature. He destroyed his reserves and abandoned them to rot. But now the scraps are withering. What remains cannot survive, and is leaving Duncan in wisps of smoke. His Wind magic is dying. A part of Duncan is dying.

And he has no idea how to stop it.

Sneaking along the beaten path are nocturnal wyrms, known as the Brushcrawlers. These dragons originate from ancient woodland forests dotting the edges of Dragonhome. They live among trees, thicket, brambles and small lakes. They've evolved tough, thorny scales in order to live in such prickly shrubbery, and for a sturdy form of defense. They are excellent at camouflage, and you'd have to do a double-take to spot them. Most live in solitude, and take care of their own for survival. While they try only to stay out of your way, they are known to lash out if threatened. Be wary of your encounter with Brushcrawlers, as they rely on old instincts and animalistic behaviors. Those that do acclimate to a life surrounded by other dragons are apt to take up jobs as herbalists.
