"I am not be be labeled by my past, nor my eyes, nor the element of magic which I master in. I am not to be identified by the brand of tragedy upon my soul. I shall be known by my own decisions, not those others around me have made, and I am the one to choose my own fate. I wish not to be defined by elements of my past; instead, I shall be the ones to decide my own allegiance, and I will survive.

Mirage was born the only Coatl in a clutch of four, four siblings born in a traveling caravan. Her siblings were all Wildclaws, and would often behave as such. Running about with boundless energy, digging in the dirt and sand in fervor, and play-fighting until the moon was high in the sky. Mirage did not share her family's enthusiasm for rough-housing, and would often keep to herself and fiddle with the trinkets that her parents gave to her. One of her siblings eventually started to keep her company, however, the kind brother Azizi. The two gradually spent more and more time together, deepening their bond as siblings. When Mirage grew a passion for crafting jewelry with gems and trinkets of sand, she and Azizi realized that they could possibly open up a shop together. Mastering a craft would surely be admired by the dragons of their caravan. The two would perform different tasks, with Azizi doing the digging for sand and gems, and Mirage doing the crafting. The two soon set up a nice little shop in their caravan, and Mirage couldn't have been prouder of their little arrangement. After being the least noticeable hatchling for so long, it was nice to gain some recognition from her clan of Drifters.

The little arrangement between her and Azizi fell apart in time, however. Azizi wished to leave the caravan. He disliked the nomadic lifestyle, and the dull colors of stone masonry and sandcarving that heavily populated the Drifters' work. Though their wagons were colorful, Azizi felt that such creativity was not matched in the work that their caravan sold. After a scathing battle of words between Azizi and one of the leaders of their clan, Azizi decided to leave. Mirage was the only one who cried at this horrid new information, and in turn she was the only one that Azizi said goodbye to. She gave him the tightest hug she could muster, and then never saw him again. The adults of the caravan acted like nothing had ever happened, strongly suggesting to Mirage that things were better off with her brother gone. They assured her that she could still continue her craft without him. Mirage, not one to put up much a fight, agreed.

The caravan continued to travel all around, and clan of Drifters decided to take a stop in the Plaguelands. Mirage was largely disinterested, having lost interest in her previous passion of jewelry-making, now taking up jobs hunting for her clan instead. The Plaguelands proved bountiful, and many villages set up there were happy to see the Drifters. Almost all were eager to buy exotic goods from the caravan. It was at one such village where Mirage met another Coatl, one with bright and dazzling colors instead of the monochromatic brown ones that she had grown up with. Her eyes were swirling fires, orange and magnificent and brilliant. The feisty Coatl immediately stole the heart of Mirage, and she found herself enamored with almost everything the other Coatl did. The other Coatl convinced Mirage to run away with her, and Mirage, blinded by fiery love, ran away with her star-crossed lover under the light of the full moon.

It did not last. Exactly two months after Mirage had left everything behind, the other Coatl was seen flirting with someone else. She hadn't noticed Mirage, and so Mirage hid within the crowd, spying on them even though she knew it was wrong. It was all the same-- the compliments, the attitude, the promises-- everything that the Coatl had said to Mirage. The Coatl was someone who craved excitement, not a long-lasting relationship. Mirage went back to the cottage that she and the other Coatl had set up, waiting there so that she could confront her lover. The fire-eyed Coatl never returned.

Though she felt horrible about it, Mirage continued to stay in the cottage. Unlike the other Coatl, she had attempted to fill it up with various trinkets and items that she liked to collect. Slowly but surely, Mirage turned the cottage into her own home, and the pain of staying diminished each day. Mirage had grown a dislike of the full moon, and tried not to stay in the cottage on nights when the great moon shown brightest. Instead, she preoccupied herself with exploring, traveling deep within caves to seek out gems for crafting. Until, one night, she decided to search for herbs instead. She had heard from others that there was a particular herb in the Plaguelands that held amazing medicinal properties, and which bloomed best under the full moon. Mirage took her chances to search under the pale white light, and discovered something other than herbs. She found a strange, little Mirror instead.

The Mirror had snuck up on Mirage, and had given the Coatl quite a fright. But, the strange creature didn't seem to be hostile, so Mirage attempted to communicate with it. Of course, it didn't speak Coatl, and it didn't even seem to have an understanding of basic draconic. It spoke in fragments and words, not sentences. But, with the use of common paw gestures, Mirage was able to communicate with the Mirror. The meeting ended when a sound in the distance scared Mirage off, and she scurried away after imparting a gift of gems to the Mirror. From then on the meetings continued, Mirage sometimes bringing gifts with her, and telling the Mirror about her life. She gave the Mirror a name, "Suki", and was confused by the language of chirps and clicks that the Mirror tried to speak. Mirage didn't know much about Suki's life, but had a feeling that discovering Suki's family would explain a lot. Oddly enough, Suki always refused to let Mirage meet her family, and was pretty good at dodging questions about her past.

Eventually, a horrible storm befell the Plaguelands. It was the coldest storm that Mirage had ever lived through, and it shook her to the bone. But Mirage was worried about Suki more than herself-- she had felt the Mirror's hide, and it was made of a durable carapace. Perfect for flexibility and defense, but horrible for the cold. Mirage summoned a halo of fire to guide her through the storm, and set off. She trudged for what felt like hours, but eventually came upon a large den, filled with creatures that looked very similar to Suki.

Suddenly, it all made sense. Suki was feral. She belonged to a subspecies of dragon, some horrifyingly large, that lived in the wilderness and did not take part in society. Mirage didn't want to think about what these large and carnivorous dragons might do, and eat, on a daily basis. Swallowing her fear, Mirage crept into the den. All of the dragons were covered in a layer of snow, and Mirage couldn't tell if they were breathing or not. Most were too large to carry or move, so Mirage was forced to crawl over them. She was able to spot Suki easily, as the Mirror was much smaller than most of her pack, and was clad in the gifts Mirage had given her to keep her warm. Mirage took Suki's unmoving body in her arms and hoisted the Mirror upon her back, also picking up three hatchlings, the only hatchlings Mirage was able to find. Though the journey was tough and arduous, Mirage was able to drag all of them back to her cottage. She warmed them up with a roaring fire, and eventually all four woke.

It was... strange, not being alone in that cottage again. The hatchlings scurried about and made a mess of things while they were unable to go outside, and Mirage helped Suki feel at home. The Mirror was awkward and still most of the time, and Mirage knew that Suki had never lived in an actual house. But slowly, she started to teach Suki. The uses of various household objects were explained, the history of Sorneith and bits of lore were gone over, and Mirage even started to teach Suki how to speak Coatl. Suki was often confused from the overload of information, but genuinely wanted to learn. Over time, the two grew closer as they were able to understand each other better and better. By the time spring rolled around, the hatchlings had left after thanking Mirage profusely. Suki could have left as well, but asked to stay instead. Mirage couldn't begin to describe the happiness that welled up inside of her as she said yes.

The months flew by, and Mirage realized that she was falling in love with Suki. Every toothy smile from the Mirror made her heart race, every compliment made her knees feel weak, every moment spent together filled her mind with a loving haze. Mirage felt warm and fuzzy around Suki, but also dread. What if Suki didn't feel the same about her? Suki was tough and brazen, was too cool to like a nervous and delicate Coatl like Mirage. Though countless confessions bubbled up inside Mirage, a rejection would break her heart. So, she kept quiet. But imagine her surprise when Suki ended up confessing to feeling the same for Mirage! It was on a moonless night, and Suki invited Mirage to go on a midnight walk with her. The Mirror was acting odd, seeming stiff and slightly jumpy, looking at Mirage only to look away again. Mirage was worried that Suki might be sick, and expressed her concern aloud. But Suki refused to turn back, having already made up her mind, and led Mirage to a quaint little setup of a table, two meals of fish and decorative flowers, and floating candles. Mirage nearly exploded with happiness when Suki sat them both down, and began to confess her love for Mirage over a dinner of Mirage's favorite fish. Mirage tearfully admitted her own feelings as well, and the two happily embraced.

The years the two had spent living together had been nice, but it was nothing compared to sharing a home with someone you loved, who you now knew loved you back. Mirage and Suki got used to doting on one another, leaving little gifts for the other to find and cooking each other's favorite meals. Walks together become romantic days out, cuddling became a daily activity, and even when they had been together long enough for the initial bubbliness to fade, their love stayed strong. It became the norm to show appreciation for one another, and the two just fell into a comfortable relationship.

One day on the night of any other full moon, Mirage and Suki went on a walk in a nearby cave. It was nothing out of the ordinary, a cave they often explore. But there was something unusual. Three large gems had appeared in the cave. Mirage approached a crystal that was brightly colored and glowing, while Suki approached the one that was darker than night. Upon touching the crystal, Mirage felt unusually hot and tried to remove her paw, but couldn't. A tingling sensation overtook her body, and to Mirage's horror, started to change her colors. No longer was Mirage the color of the earth, instead she was now decorated with three entirely different colors, with new detailed patterns of rose quartz upon her body as well. When the crystal released her, Mirage wildly looked around for Suki, who appeared to have her scars covered up by an obsidian-like gem. Mirage was close to tears, fearing that Suki would no longer love her now that her appearance had changed so drastically. Suki rushed over to Mirage, comforting her love and assuring her that she would love the Coatl no matter what. While Suki peppered Mirage with compliments and assurances, she accidentally knocked over a white obelisk. It crashed to the ground, startling both, and out popped a pure white Fae. Momentarily distracted, the two girlfriends observed the creature. It had the darkest red eyes they had ever seen, and looked to be a newborn. Mirage and Suki looked at the disoriented and confused creature, then at each other, making a wordless agreement.

It's odd, having a child that you can barely understand. Suki, who is better at speaking Coatl than common draconic, is the only one who can really teach the Fae. She's also the only one that can actually understand the Fae as well, since Mirage can't make heads or tails of his monotone voice. It's unusual, and sometimes difficult, but the three of them are managing just fine. Together, they are a happy and loving family.

Known as Drifters, the nomadic clans of the Shattered Plain can be found just about anywhere within Dragonhome. Using their environment to their advantage, they specialize in sandcarving, digging and stone masonry. Each travelling clan takes part in commerce, selling their craft and making names for themselves. They prefer to live primarily within their wooden caravans and colourful wagons. Drifters' glass wings and polished earth-tone hides allow them to blend right into their desert surroundings, should they need to protect themselves. For days on end, these dragons will stride the drifting sands, looking for new villages and new opportunities.
