Daybreak is still somewhat soft by Wildclaw standards, having spent her youth in the golden days of the Polareis clan, when the coatl nobility's sensibility dictated correct behavior. As she wavered between various influences encouraging her to be more violent or more polite, war erupted in the clan. Suddenly pushed to acts of violence, Daybreak tries her best to return to her competitive Wildclaw roots. In doing so, she ends up pushing her mate away from her.

As the conflict comes to a standstill, skirmishes resulting in no clear victor, Daybreak has more time to reflect on her natural inclinations. Realizing that while she can force herself to be aggressive, she prefers peace, she sincerely apologizes to Elster. And although he forgives her, they don't resume their relationship.

Around that time, she happens to see Dawnstar in passing. His overt distress resonates with the loneliness she's trying not to express, so she approaches him. As they converse, Daybreak is reminded of an easier time in the clan's history. She escorts him to the next party, hoping to simply drop him off in Lottie's care. To her surprise, he insists on her dancing with him. Unused to the steps, Daybreak fumbles at first. But Dawnstar is both patient enough and stubborn enough to continue teaching her.
