I Have So Many of These

After the cold reception you received from the lieutenant, you take a moment to consider your options. None of the warriors appear to be friendly. You didn’t expect them to be, not exactly, but... They look nothing like the well dressed, respected soldiers you’ve seen in parades or attending to royalty back home. Rather than polished helms or glittering chest plates or elegantly draped banners, these dragons are grimy and vicious. Their armor is scratched, bloodstained, covered in scorch marks from flame or lightning. Cloth trails after their steps in tattered clumps. Skulls and baubles from their latest kills are draped around them in place of jewelry. Most of it doesn’t match, as if it was stolen or scavenged rather than forged by one craftsman. You don’t feel safe standing next to them. You have a hard time believing any of their clanmates do either.

After looking around for awhile, your eyes fall to a banescale, his wings tucked neatly at his sides. Soaring through the skies in battle, they are often a dangerous sight to behold. When relaxed, they seem no different from their fellow dragons. He is not wearing armor, probably because there isn’t any to steal. Or maybe the weight makes it harder for them to fly. You suppose that their strategy must be to fly above their opponent and attack with their rear claws, so being able to maneuver in the air would be more important than deflecting attacks. But you’re not exactly an expert. In any case, he seems a bit more level-headed than the other banescale, and it’s hard to be intimidated by a dragon that waddles when it walks.

I won’t let my clan forget that you are safe in our borders. At least for today, you are not our enemy.

You dip your head to acknowledge him, and indicate that you would like to hear him speak.

You don’t have to worry about Hex. She is the commander of our forces in the field, but I make the strategic decisions. It doesn’t take a strategist to know that killing a dragon carrying a treaty is not a tactical decision.

My egg was sitting next to Hex's when we were discovered, but from our different colored eyes we must have been born far apart. How exactly we ended up together is a mystery, but we've never been apart since then.

That would be a cute story if she hadn’t tried to rip your face off a minute ago.

You’re observant. I’m sure that compared to others, Hex and I are quite boring shades of brown and grey. But to think like a tactician, you must consider the things you don’t see. There is a reason that two banescales survived while many others did not. Perhaps we blended in with the dirt and ashes of the battlefield.

Brute force is not the only tool used in warfare. If we can hide in the shadows until the right time to strike, we can strike without fear. Hex has never been afraid of anything, and while its inspirational to the rest of our fighters, it worries me sometimes. Fighting is in our blood, but our kind almost died. It is not cowardice to consider all of our options carefully and choose the best course of action. Our Matriarch knew that it takes more than one dragon to win in combat. Between my careful planning and Hex’s boldness, there is a middle ground that our enemies do not expect. I just wish that when we disagreed, Vira didn't suggest rock paper scissors.

You aren’t sure if he’s joking or not, but you hold back a laugh just in case. Maybe he is more dangerous than the last banescale, but somehow, you feel like you understand him a bit better. It’s hard, having so much counting on you.
