Anselm was one of the clan's top advisors when they lived in the Southern Icefield, and while he technically held that title even in the new Polareis, he was often ignored by Cilla in favor of Venia's and Morpha's influence. Extremely upset with his declining status, Anselm doubled down, becoming more arrogant and stubborn than before. His arrogance was further edged on by his mate Tianyi, who had her own ambitions of separating him from the clan and starting a new one.

When Cilla's influence became more obviously twisted, Anselm loudly proclaimed that he had seen it coming, and that none of this would have happened had they stayed in the Southern Icefield where they belong. Bexelia knows that in a certain way of thinking, he might be right about that. It is partially in repentance that she allows him a place on the clan's new council. His advice still often goes ignored, but some of the council members make an effort to make him feel respected.

This meager offering is barely enough for him, and not enough for his mate and followers. As Tianyi plants the seeds of rebellion in Anselm's companions, they put more and more pressure on him to leave this mess and start a new clan. Still, he has some loyalty, and believes it his responsibility to help put an end to the disaster his clan started.

In the end, it's no surprise when Tianyi leaves him. Anselm scrambles to find a new mate, feeling that it is unseemly for him to be single. His resulting partnership with Snowdrift is cold and practical.
