Although Snowdrift hatches as a pale coatl, her parents refuse to allow her any weakness. Fearing being left behind, she trails after both of them in turn, trying to emulate or at least watch their day-to-day tasks. Her father finds that she gets underfoot, so after a while, she ends up spending more time with her mother instead. A mortician by trade, her mother is distant at best, and while she allows Snowdrift the privilege of watching her work, she gives little instruction. Still, Snowdrift picks up on her skills, learning through practice on small animals how to embalm the dead. It isn't until she gets older that she realizes how unsettling her skillset is to other dragons.

When she feels that she can learn no more from shadowing her mother, she sets out on her own. Time after time, she is turned away from other lairs, her dull coloration considered a bad omen. And although Snowdrift does not believe the rumors any more than her parents did, it is undeniably true that portions of her body are solidifying, making her motions grow slow and deliberate.

She arrives in Polareis following the scent of decay. Here, she finds that no one minds her subtle coloration, and her morbid skillset is seen as respectable. To her surprise, she is the object of some courtship as well. Not understanding the vibrant emotions that some dragons have towards their mates, she settles down with Anselm, judging him a worthy father to her future hatchlings.
