The innermost chambers of the den are a flurry of activity. Eggs lay nestled in comfortable bundles of feathers, stuck together with a greenish liquid. Coatls pace the cavern, fussing over decorations, the arrangement of items, and their own plumage. One is much brighter in color than the rest, settling a dispute between quarreling hatchlings. The guilty pair look relieved at your momentary distraction, and take the opportunity to scamper off, leaving you both alone. You’re here for a story, right? I get why you’re nervous. I heard rumors about plague clans long before I found myself here. The kind to scare hatchlings, about dragons that kill and eat their injured clanmates. It was silly, but I was afraid… not for myself, but for my mate Kada. Ever since we were little he was separated from the group, believed to be a bad omen or sick due to his pale coloring. I snuck away to play with him, never truly understanding the situation. Sometimes Coatl get a fuller coat or glossier feathers as they age... but Kada's only came in darker. Eventually he decided that if he was sick, then he may as well join the Plaguebringer. I couldn't let him go alone, so I traveled with him, leaving our home behind to face the unknown together. On the way we were attacked by harpies. It was awful. My tail hurt too badly to fly straight, and I knew I would just slow us down, make us easy prey… But Kada couldn't leave me either. We looked for a cave to hide in for the night. We found an angry Guardian waiting there! I'm sure you know the rest. The Coatl’s feathers tense up nervously, and he shakes them out, the baubles on his tail clacking against each other. I would like to say something, if you’ll listen. This place and it's people are ruthless, because they have to be. But I have never felt more at home than I do right here. I stay in the den and watch the hatchlings, making their nests and keeping the place lively. I wish the Banescales didnt pull my feathers out, and a litter of Coatls can be a handful, and Mirrors certainly like to chew on things, but... Sassa knew that not everyone needs to be a fighter. She protects the eggs, but I keep them warm. Both of those things matter, and I don't think my old clan understood that. Kada isn't really sick, but there are plenty of our clanmates who are. That doesn't matter when we're all family. You could be too, if you wanted to be. I guess you have somewhere to go back to, but a lot of us don’t. So don’t think too badly of us, okay? |
