Flight Tutor

Vermeil landed with a gust that ruffled the feathers and downy coats of her fledging students. She turned her head to eye them one by one; two twin tundras, a veilspun, a guardian and a very excitable mirror who was chewing on her own tail.

They were huddled together and eyeing her back. Each hatchling was looking between her eyes and her talons. She wished her appearance didn't rattle her confidence, she should consider wearing something like a flower or a scarf to settle their nerves. Then again, the natural smoke pouring from her maw didn't assist her either. She swished her tail and shook herself off, first lessons were never easy.

"My name is Vermeil. I will be teaching you to take off today. Please do your best and don't hurry yourselves, you have plenty of time to learn and today is the first of many lessons."

The hatchlings nodded, fidgeting or nibbling themselves nervously.

"Now, all of our wings are different. Some are big, some are small. Some are built for speed, others are built for duration. But can anyone tell me what unites them?"

There was an awkward silence. The Mirror spoke up, mumbling through her tail.

"We don't speak with our mouths full." She rolled her eyes.
"We, uhhhhhhhhhhh, all can flap?"
"...Good enough." Vermeil said gruffly, raising her wings, "We can generate lift through flapping. Our differences are when we need to generate lift. Some of us need to generate it to take off and some need to generate lift when we're in the air."

The hatchlings all tilted their heads in unison. These weren't the brightest bunch she had taught, apparently.

"Let's think about it like this; some of you can fly from the ground, some will need to take a running start and some of you will need to glide from a high place first."

"How do we know what we need to do?" Said one of the tundras, raising their paw.
"Hm, let me demonstrate with you." Vermeil said, pointing with her wing, "Come over here, don't be shy..."

The little red tundra shrivelled on the spot, her eyes bulging from her head. She was frozen in place. Vermeil didn't have time to coax her out and so walked over and snapped her up by the scruff before plonking her back down on the grass. She looked stupefied.

"Stand up now, there we go." She prodded and poked him into position, "Raise your wings, show them off. There's a good lass."

She was stiffer than a cat pulled out of a rain barrel but it worked well enough. The students tentatively padded towards her as Vermeil traced the tundra's outline with her claw.

"You see here... err, what's your name?"
"Cae..." She whimpered.
"Good name, fine name. Now, Cae's wings are large, look how they run down the whole length of her side. Big strong wings." Vermeil nudged her trembling wings higher with her nose, "Baggy too, plenty of room for air to carry her underneath. And if she gives them a flap..."

Cae stood stock still as Vermeil waited.
"I said, now if she gives them a flap."
Cae got the message and flapped her wings as fast as she could before Vermeil stopped her with a claw, the air ruffled the fur of the observant little dragons.

"Very good, you can see a lot of air is push down and out from the flapping."

She nudged the dizzied tundra back into the heap of hatchlings and then ushered the tiny veilspun forward.

"Now you, err...?"
"Coeruleus." He said, standing on his back paws.
"Coeruleus, what a fancy lad, why don't you give us a flap?"

Coeruleus got on all fours and began to flutter his wings as fast as he could. The translucent appendages blurred and glittered in the air but made very little breeze.

"See that? Beautiful wings but not much air movement. These wings are made for maneuverability -- Coeruleus is going to be very good as weaving and dancing in the air one day, but he'll need take off from somewhere high to get going."

"CAN I HAVE A GO?!" Said the mirror scampering up to Vermeil.
"Of course, give us a flap." She laughed, "I appreciate your enthusiasm."
With a grunt, the young mirror raised her wings and slammed them down. She was slow, but strong and would grow into her wings soon.

"Your wings are very big and very heavy, right?" She asked, the mirror growled in frustration as she nodded, "That means you're going to have to take off running before you get off the ground and then you'll be able to soar for a very long time in the air."

The hatchling scowled, "I wanted to be fast."
"You will be, I promise." Vermeil said, "You have very similar wings to me. Wings for hunting. Watch this."

Vermeil swept her wings back to keep the hatchlings back before she started into an awkward gallop. Thudding across the grass before she beat her wings down and launched into the air, she swooped up to the gasp of her little crowd. She grinned to herself, now she had their attention. Vermeil climbed and climbed into the air, her strong wings never failing before she reached a hover above them.

She eyed down a target of a tussock in the grass, her students were nothing more but little dots on the vast green garden.

In a flash, she pulled her wings in tight and dropped like a missile through the air. The wind whistled then screeched past her ears as she reached out her talons and pulled out her wings like a parachute. Her talons pierced into the ground and the air whooshed as it hit the faces of the hatchlings.

A chorus of delighted chirps and whoops reached her as she caught her breath. They lolloped and tumbled towards her, all cheering and shouting. She curled up in the grass and chuckled as they fell over themselves trying to ask questions all at once.

"Now lads, lasses and all, do you think you can try your best for me so one day you can try that?"

The hatchling almost knocked her down with a shout of yes and she felt as if she had done the hardest part.
