For all intent and purpose, it technically was his fault. The start of the story laying solely to blame at the heel of one rather grubby and questionable Mirror. Toad did not know his parents for long, birthed into the world with an abundance of siblings and with hopeful eyes. He did not know any of them for long but long enough that their absence was felt as a tremor through his life. The plague was never one to be merciful, never one to play favourites even among those within it's own land; even to those who would revere the Plaguebringer in all her might. It swept over the mixed family of dragons, sparing but a small few to struggle those days more only to meet the hand of fate elsewhere. Toad's own fate was met at the claw of a lone traveler, an individual who claimed prowess over plant life; some form of wayward Herbalist that took pity on the Mirrors scrawny form and allowed him to follow. The brightly coloured Nocturne (Atlas, Toad came to know) took him into his clan and for all Toad cared, saved his life from a grander suffering. The grey Mirror was a fast learner and for all Atlas had to teach, he would have thrice more questions with fewer and fewer answers as time passed by. Soon enough, the pair were less of strangers and closer than brothers would be; all Atlas knew was passed to Toad in hopes he would survive upon his own in the future and use such knowledge to help those as he had once been helped before. As time ticked by, Toad expanded his tiny friendship circle to that of new wayward souls that also passed into Siege's 'Clan'; a purple Mirror, likely no older than he was, certainly took place as his best friend and in doing so changed their lives for better or worse; such was yet to be seen. When the time came and the Clan split, Toad found himself stood firmly upon one side of the line and watched as Atlas sorrowfully stood upon the other. The betrayal stung and he could hardly fathom why Atlas would leave him for the horror that Siege was. Their clan was naught but a sham of scared and outcast creatures looking for someone stronger to save them! "I'm sorry..." Words mouthed as Atlas turned and followed in the large dark shadow cast in Siege's agonized wake. Betrayal stung deep but Toad knew better than to let is fester to poison. There were always fresher streams of water to flush out the infected. |
