Warriors rise and fall, and Arluin was no exception. From the first day of his life, born to a family full of love, Arluin lived for many things. First, himself. Then, his family. And finally, the last of all, Flamecaller. A life always with purpose, to meet a death with none.

Arluin roamed little in his young years, though he dreamed of it. Time was better spent helping his parents and siblings just as they helped him, but he lived for himself in his mind and readings. If not for education, he might not have known the years that passed, if any had at all, but he cared. There was far too much he wished to do, and far too little time to do it. He feared death, but living for himself would never be enough.

In family came unexpected respite, for he found someone to love and die for, and soon after they had little ones for him to watch grow. The first group were everything they could've wanted, and the second was even more. It was the third that brought tragedy; his mate left him without a lover and their children without a mother.

Arluin did not know how long it'd been since then. It was long enough for their children to have grown and gone.

They resented him, he knew. Their mother's death had left him but a shell of his old self; suddenly, there was nothing to live for. How selfish was he, to stop living for his children once their mother was gone? They deserved better, he knew.

Malinda was one of many he met who knew the feeling of having everything and yet having nothing. It didn't matter whether it was one or the other, or both at the same time. Not to him, anyway. He thought he saw his mate in her. Was reincarnation real? Malinda is a phoenix, and his mate was not, but only the gods knew how phoenixes are born. He gave her a name, for she had none; she brought him tales of her life chasing a dream.

Now, to Arluin, death meant a reminder of life. Life meant quiet, peaceful, respite from regrets and memories made in his life. Death brought disturbance and memory, horrible memory, dampened only by descriptions of places he once wished to go.

Dearly he wished for her to leave him to his quiet peace, peace he had before she came. Death became disruptive and loud; where it once seemed timeless, death dragged on for eons whilst life now came and went in moments.

She made her choice. If she could not die and stay with him, then could he not live? He knew it would change little; their time together would remain the same, but he knew she thought her dearest and only friend deserved life more than she did. He told her once - only once - about his death: a battle long ago against a mighty foe, fighting for the Flamecaller and dying for her. He knew she felt jealousy then, wondering what it was like to live life with something worth dying for. She knew now, he thought.

He let her.

Now a beast of instinct.

A monster kept on short leash

____Regret plagued him in life, only leaving him at peace in death. It wa an odd feeling; he'd never known such peace in life. Yet regret was back, and he wished he'd never met the phoenix.

____He hadn't known what to expect. Pain? Nausea? Nothing? Could a spirit even feel pain or nausea? He did not know, and could only wait. She would find it, or rather, find someone. Perhaps telling her where he died hadn't been a good idea.

____It was what he thought and not. Was that pain? Was that nausea? It was not nothing, but he did not know what it was. He twitched uncontrollably, hurting without hurting, burning without burning, freezing without freezing. Death was meeting life in him, crawling through him and into the world ruled by life.

____And so, as they ended their magic, he could only meet her burning eyes with his own.

____Forgiveness came with the speed of a glacier melting, though he made it seem immediate. He knew Malinda hadn't known what to expect out of this, and neither had he. He hadn't given it thought; he hadn't cared to. He wished, now, that he had.

____He rose, clad in death and fire. But was he him, or not him? He did not know. Was he both him and not him, at the same time, in the same corpse? He did not know.

____He moved. Not him moved too. Was it death? Was he dead, or is he alive? Somehow he thought he was both, a gateway linking death and life. But he was no longer a spirit, of that he was sure. He could feel the wind, the grass... and the fear.

____It was his fear. As her gaze burned into his own, he felt something. Not him, but in him, with him, almost him, and it said but one thing: kill.
