Death: cold, yet it burns

Cold ice but burning fire

Trapped, I am not free

Like me you are not

Or so I hope, I wish not

Yet should you and I

Be alike, Go, Go

Go to life, go without me,

You bring warmth to me.

Phoenixes rise and fall, and Malinda is no exception. From the first day of her life, rising from the ashes of a just-beginning celebration, blessed and doomed she was. Blessed to live forever like many dreamed. Doomed to loneliness forever like many feared.

Unnamed she roamed without a home, never finding one like her to stay with her. She did not know the years that passed, if any had at all, and she did not care. There was nothing in life to make her fear death, and nothing in death to make her want life. She had immortality, yes, but there was nothing to live for and even less to die for.

In death came her only respite, for oddly enough death allowed her to speak with other departed. Her first death brought nothing, and neither did her second. By the time there was something, she'd lost count of her deaths. Perhaps the lucky number was three - it could have been three thousand.

Unnamed did not know how long Arluin had been there. Perhaps he always was. Perhaps he never was.

The others resented her. What had she done to deserve the chance to live again after death? Nothing, she was sure. She was sure many of them were far more deserving.

Arluin was the first and last she met to think differently. He was her first and last friend. He gave her a name, an identity, a desire. He told her of places in the world, places she'd never been and places he'd dreamed of visiting. For him, she visited those places during life. He made her death a rebirth; she brought him stories of places he could no longer go.

Now, to Malinda, death was a thousand times better than life. Life meant wandering and loneliness dampened only by the moments spent living Arluin's dream. Death brought her to the open arms of a friend, and warmth amongst the chill of spirits.

Dearly she wished to have him by her side in life, just as he was in death. Life became a thousand times more dreadful; even with her newfound purpose, it dragged for eons whilst death came and went in moments.

She made her choice. If she could not die and stay with him, then could he not live? For her, it would change little; her time with him would remain the same, but surely her dearest and only friend deserved life more than she did. He told her once - only once - about his death: a battle long ago against a mighty foe, fighting for the Flamecaller and dying for her. She felt jealousy then, and wondered what it was like to live life with something worth dying for.

Now, she knew.

Never a warrior nor a fighter,

Yet the creator of a beast, a monster.

Using magic, keep him at peace

To protect him and others.

Life: warm, yet it chills

Hot fire but bitter cold

Trapped, yet I am free

Like me you are not

Or so I hope, I wish not

Yet should you and I

Be alike, Come, Come

Come to life, come be with me

You bring warmth to me.

____Desire fueled her. It was an odd feeling; never had she felt so strongly before. Yet desire was there, driving her beyond what she thought herself capable of.

____The lands outside of Ashfall were always cold to her, but she did not shiver. Nothing on this earth, not even the frozen icefields in the south, could match the coldness of death. But death was not cold, not so long as Arluin was there. Life was cold, simply because he was not there.

____She found it. Or rather, she found someone. They were versed in magic she dared not touch. They possessed the power she sought. It was fortunate Arluin told her where he'd died; despite the battlefield's worth of bodies his was easy to find. She'd know it anywhere, and the armor he wore in life was the same he'd worn in death.

____And so, as they begun their magic, she only watched and shivered as death met life.

____Regret came like a wave crashing onto a beach. Malinda hadn't known what to expect out of this. She hadn't given it thought; she hadn't cared to. She wished, then, that she had.

____The creature that arose was clad in death and fire. Ravens fled from it in fear, its heat scorching their feathers as they flew. Lava dripped and dribbled from its fangs, and death's shroud pulled away just enough to expose the skull below.

____It moved. The movements were odd, as if it was there and also not. She could see an apparition of where it was after each motion, an apparition that would slowly fade into its new position. A bony arm was visible, and a piece of wing looked burned away. She remembered the wing being whole, before.

____It looked at her. Orange eyes, looking foreign and out of place in the skull, burned into hers. She could not tell if there was recognition there.
