┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
The Gaoler’s head broke through the crust of snow, giving his thick, ice-colored mane an enormous shake. The rest of his heavily furred body soon followed, snow cascading down in big heaps as it fell from his coat, revealing the white tiger-striped pelt beneath. Yawning widely, Albus gave his ears a scratch with a hind foot, then lengthened his whole body in a gigantic stretch.

With a contented smile, Albus gazed down at the three eggs nestled between his four massive paws.

For as long as he could remember, Albus had wanted to be a father. He dreamed of carrying his own little hatchling on his back, its face buried in his warm, soft mane, while he told it the stories from his childhood, imparting all the valuable life lessons he had learned. No matter where Albus went in the world or what he accomplished, he felt that it would all mean nothing if he couldn’t have offspring of his own to share his adventures with. Luckily, he had recently met a female Gaoler new to the clan who agreed that he would make an excellent father. The only catch was, she told Albus, she had no desire to be a mother.

Albus carefully considered her proposal, but when he really thought about it, he realized he had never pictured a mate by his side when he became a father. No, he knew he would love his hatchling more than enough on his own. The next day, he broke the news to Fantasia and began constructing a nest for her. The day the eggs were laid, Albus almost wept with joy. Fantasia, on the other hand, was less than a little unenthusiastic. She had arranged for a surrogate in the clan to incubate her eggs for her, confident that no harm would befall them while under the care of such a powerful clan. But the thought of passing that burden on to someone else just didn’t sit right with Albus. Ever the devoted father, he respectfully asked Fantasia if he could be the one to incubate the eggs. The indifferent female just shrugged and ran off to go hunting.

Overjoyed, Albus immediately went to Euphonia, pestering her with questions. How should he position himself around the eggs? How long until they hatched? How many hours a day should he lay on them? If he talked to them, would the hatchlings hear him?

The Coatl rolled her eyes, but patiently answered Albus’ queries. She made it clear that incubation for Gaoler eggs was only highly critical at night, when there was no sun to heat them or melt the fresh snow that fell. Since it was wintertime in Sorneith, snowfall was expected almost every day and night. Albus anxiously listened to her instructions, following them to a tee.

He knew the eggs wouldn’t hatch today, but he couldn’t help himself. Bending carefully over his clutch, he pressed a soft ear against the rough shell of one of the eggs. Silence, as per usual. But then… a small scratching sound, as if the little Goaler inside was scratching its quickly growing claws against the inside of the egg. As he listened to the sound of his future offspring, Albus felt large watery tears begin to run down his face. He couldn’t imagine a more perfect sound. He spoke softly to the hatchling inside, telling it and its siblings about the wondrous world it would soon be born into and the wondrous clan that would soon become their family.
