~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The gigantic glacier began to sweat in the intense midday sun. It was finally summertime in the Southern Icefields, and the first snowmelt had begun. Water ran down the sides of the glacier in little streams and rivulets, flowing down, down until they reached a stunning crystal-clear glacial lake. Hours passed with nothing but the sound of gently trickling water, until…
CRACK!
As if struck by some gigantic, invisible fist, the glacier split right down the middle, bits of ice flying everywhere and scattering down its sides. When the final debris had come to rest, all was quiet again, apart from the ever-constant trickling of the icy water.
Although the scene appeared as still and serene as before, something extraordinary had happened when the glacier cracked, something that might have gone overlooked by a careless observer. A creature had emerged soundlessly from the crevasse in the ice-- a small dragon. The dragon did not make a sound, nor did she appear to exist at all, sometimes blending in so well with the blue-ish tinged ice around her that it was impossible to make out her figure.
The dragon moved extremely slowly, as if she herself were melting at the same rate as her glacial backdrop. She stretched each limb agonizingly slowly, the reflective surface of her wings and body glinting in the sun’s light. Finally, after several painfully lengthy hours, the dragon gave her wings a gigantic shake and took to the skies in a sudden burst of movement. Those who might have observed this phenomenon (of which there were none present) would have described the flight as that of a snowflake suddenly shooting from the ground and then floating lazily once aloft.
The dragon herself was a very special creature. She spent her entire winters encased in the foreboding glacier itself, only to emerge when the summer sun began to thaw her icy chambers. Some even said that she was the spirit of the glacier, and just as ancient. Others claimed she was just a Skydancer that had gone a little strange. Either way, she had emerged in all her glory, free to wander the summer world as she wished. Just like a bear upon waking from hibernation, the petite female was ravenous, and proceeded to devour everything edible in sight-- most notably the insects flocking to the fresh runoff and the lush flowers just beginning to poke their stalks above the thin layer of snow that remained on the ground.
In the coming weeks, she would reap the bounty of the glacier, while also keeping watch and protecting her sacred home. She would thrive in the height of summer and watch dragons swim in her lake and find beauty in her world. And finally, when the days began to grow shorter, and the sun no longer beat with intensity upon the earth, she would walk quietly up the glacier, whispering to it as she went, communicating that now was the time to rest again. To grow, become stronger, bigger, in order that the land might benefit from its waters when summer came again. Taking one last look around at the staggering beauty around her, the dragon would climb back down into the crevice formed by the glacier, and seal herself inside, only to awaken in a year’s time.
