┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Jin was having a very abnormal day. To start things off, he slept in, which he never did. Jin prided himself on always being the first to rise, ready to greet the day full of energy and positivity. But this morning had been unusually overcast and when Jin finally awoke, he realized the world was already teaming with activity without him. To make matters worse, as soon as he awoke, a light drizzle began falling, soaking his fresh new plumage he had been hoping to show off to prospective mates.
Love was in the air this time of year in Sorneith and Jin was determined not to spend another year alone. Not that he minded his own company, or felt that he needed a romantic partner to make him feel whole, but some days, he just wanted someone to chat with about life, to hunt together, to preen and court like he had seen many other Banescales doing, and at night, someone to curl up next to, someone to make him feel safe and warm... Jin inwardly rolled his eyes. He was becoming quite the romantic sap, wasn't he? Ever the optimist, Jin began his morning stretch, determined to make the most of his day, despite the way his feathers now clung to his wings in unflattering clumps. Unfortunately, fate did not seem to appreciate his positive attitude. After almost four hours of hunting with no success, Jin was thoroughly annoyed and hungry, which was never a good combination for him. As he stomped through the forest understory in defiance of his bad luck, scaring off any potential game in the process, his enormous foot suddenly stepped down on an unfamiliar oozing yet sharp substance. In dismay, Jin lifted his foot to reveal a crushed nest of eggs. Not only had he wasted a perfectly good meal, but the owner of the nest returned just at that moment and sent her talons scraping painfully along Jin's back. Jin ran away in terror, yelling apologies at the furious female grouse, which of course, did no good since she couldn't understand him. Tears pooling in his eyes and threatening to run down his cheeks, Jin collapsed at the base of a large oak tree, defeated. Positive thinking was getting him nowhere today. But then, right as that thought crossed his mind, fate decided to throw him a bone. The peculiar sound of feathers rustling trickled its way through the undergrowth and into the male's ears, which perked up instantly. Jin knew that sound. It was the sound of Banescale plumes, very similar to the sound his own feathers made when he lifted them in a display, doing his best to impress whatever dragon was nearby. Drawn towards the sound, Jin reached the edge of a clearing in the forest and looked upon a lush green meadow, speckled with brightly colored wildflowers in vibrant purples, blues and yellows. His attention didn't stay on the flora for long though as his eyes quickly caught sight of the source of the sound that had drawn him here. A Banescale with light brown feathers danced in the center of the meadow, wreaths of wildflowers crowning his head and feet. His olive green plumes raised and lowered in time with his complex movements, moving with graceful fluidity. The Banescale's eyes were closed, completely lost in his performance, even though Jin could see no other observer apart from himself. Transfixed, Jin watched in awe as the male continued his elaborate display. He couldn't really say how long the entire thing lasted, he was so lost in the beauty of the dragon before him, but when it was over, he let out several high-pitched chirps of praise. The other male finally noticed his audience of one, and bowed low in gratitude, an adorable flush creeping up his neck. Jin approached the male, his head lowered in a shy gesture, searching for any indication that the male had any interest in him. The Banescale's eyes finally raised to his and Jin found himself lost in the deepest blue eyes he had ever seen. Mustering all the courage and optimism he had left, Jin fanned his own plumes, somehow now miraculously dry and shimmering despite this morning's rain. The brilliant scarlet feathers flashed in the sun, and Jin spread his wings wide, raising himself to his full height and trying to look as dashing as possible. And somehow, it worked. The tan-colored Banescale moved closer, quite timidly, and then gently reached out his neck to touch Jin's own. Jin reciprocated the gesture, heart pounding ferociously with excitement as if attempting to leap from his ribcage. Finally, it seemed, his luck had turned. |
