The Oath of Vengeance is often taken by paladins who feel a great deal of anger. Oftentimes they feel it is their duty to strike down darkness before it can hurt anyone, because they have been wronged in the past and felt helpless to prevent it. Reina is not one such paladin. The Oath of Vengeance is, to her, the most efficient and clear way of destroying evil. Her father, Veilios, was bound by his Oath not to kill anyone in his family. As a result, he broke his Oath by killing a corrupted family member, and thus became an Oathbreaker. Foolish. Killing a shade-infected dragon should never, in Reina’s eyes, be the cause of a broken Oath. Killing any evil creature, in fact, should not be seen as a bad thing. Moreover, there is no set of morals so flawless that it excuses losing a battle that could easily be won. If she has weakened an opponent, it is only right that she take advantage of that weakness. If she is able to distract an enemy, it is only fair that she use that moment of distraction. As an instructor at the Kritikos Paladin Academy, the pearlcatcher paladin shines when it comes to combat. Her students come to her expecting praise for mediocrity, and she happily knocks them down a few pegs by faking them out or tripping them or taking cheap shots. A real enemy, she points out, will not bow and clearly state when the battle has begun; nor, she adds when the students are nursing bruised egos, will a real enemy surrender the moment they are pinned. Though her cousins and her brother often despair of her harsh treatment and suggest that she go a little easier on the young dragons who come to the academy, Reina finds that - more often than not - graduating students return to thank her after their first real battle, stating that they were prepared for their foe’s tricks because she had made it so clear that foes are so rarely honorable. It always pleases her to hear. Strict though she may be, the paladin does not wish to see her students fail. Rather, she only hopes to prepare them for the dangers that await them all across Sornieth, dangers that are far worse than a simple pearlcatcher who pulls her punches and slows her blade. The Oath of Vengeance is not Reina’s because it demands that its followers do evil to destroy evil. It is hers because it disregards the notion that a paladin is honor-bound to idiotic ideals of honor and fairness. There is no good and evil when it comes to battle - there is only a winner and a loser. Reina will not be the loser. |
