Armed with a gem of True Seeing set into an eyepiece, Veilios hunts down the monster that used to be his older sister. His family knows what she is, and they know what happened to her. The ridgeback who tried to kill her. The way the Shade took advantage of her momentary vulnerability to creep into her heart and destroy her from the inside. The oathbreaker she has become. Veilios has always trusted his family. His parents are wise and capable paladins. His older siblings are his role models. Raum's refusal to be held back by her own weaknesses shaped his understanding of how to grow stronger. Cygon's stubborn conviction taught him never to give up. Zaldra's belief in mercy and second chances made him realize that not everyone who has fallen is doomed. His family's rules, their lessons, all made Veilios who he is today, and for the longest time, he has been certain that everything they told him is the concrete truth. Raum's corruption shook Veilios to his core. His infallible older sister had failed to uphold her oath. If she could make such a grievous mistake, were the other members of the family at risk of doing the same? Suddenly his elder brother's determination seemed foolhardy, and his sister's trusting attitude was just asking for betrayal. His parents' faith seemed misplaced. His nestmates' sorrow at the loss of their sister, and their hope that Zaldra could bring her back to the light - it was all so foolish. So hopeless. Did they not understand that they were clinging to dreams that had no foundation? Raum had broken her oath. She would never be the same again. Cygon set out to find the ridgeback who had caused Raum to become corrupted. Zaldra set out to find Raum herself and redeem her. Veilios could not bear to see his older siblings, who he had once admired so much, fall to corruption. Against the will of all the Kritikos family, disobeying his parents, working against his siblings, Veilios set out to find Raum and strike her down. |
