When you see the paladin land, chest heaving with exertion and wings shaking from overuse, your eyes fall on the black metal necklace at her throat before anything else. Not to the winged blade that sung through the air to your defense. Not to the rich blue robes that protect her figure. Only to the collar that seems to draw in the light around it, and the blue stone set within it that pulses faintly. Threnos, as she introduces herself, is a rather proud and outspoken figure. She preaches of the Lightweaver's radiance with wings thrown wide and tail waving wildly. Her armor is flawless, a gleaming cobalt that boasts no scratches, no dents, even from the battle that only just took place. She tells you she takes pride in her appearance, for it would be an insult to the Lightweaver if she represented anything less than perfection. There is not a flaw in her armor, but you sense one in the front she puts up. When your gaze lingers too long on the collar at her throat, she grows louder and more eager to draw your attention to other things, and when you pretend to be caught up in her distraction you see her raise a claw and cover the pulsing orb set into the metal. When she leaves you, she does it with triumph and enthusiasm, and you nod along with her prayers for the Lightweaver to protect you. Then she is gone, and you are alone again. For all her exuberance, Threnos is not the zealous paladin she pretends to be. True, her faith in the Lightweaver is strong. But it is not absolute. Around her neck the young paladin wears a darksteel necklace that is part of a pair. The gem in the center beats like a heart so long as the wearer of the other piece is alive, and this serves Threnos with a grim reminder that her duties do not stop so long as the pulses continue. A war wages in her heart - a war of what she believes to be true and what she knows. The sides are equal in their conviction and so she cannot settle on one or the other. But someday the time will come when she must make up her mind, and she knows that she cannot tarry forever. |
