Malleable Graybricks
Wildwood Moss
Depleted Sacridite
Deep down, in the foundations of his castle, Ariel found a door. It hung half open on rusted hinges, and a hook beside it held an old key, dripping rust stains down the stone walls.

Ariel pushed the door the rest of the way open, though it complained with screeching hinges and scraping wood. Then, he tentatively stepped into the cold, dark room behind it.

Using what little magic he knew, Ariel conjured a dim, flickering ball of arcane light. Its pink glow illuminated the shadowy forms of large stone slabs lining the walls. This light followed along, hovering by Ariel’s shoulder, as he approached the nearest stone slab. The only sound was his claws clicking on the stone floor.

Carved atop the stone slab was the image of a sleeping pearlcatcher. Beneath the carved dragon were unfamiliar words, and more familiar numbers. Dates, Ariel realised. Dates from five centuries ago.

He moved to the next stone slab, claw-clicks echoing, dim light flickering. As with the one before, a sleeping pearlcatcher was carved atop it, with words Ariel couldn’t read, and dates marked five centuries ago.

The next slab, he found, was much the same again.

A shiver ran down Ariel’s spine, and out to the tips of his wings.

He had found the crypt.

Reverently, Ariel continued deeper into the forgotten crypt, past images of dragons who inhabited his castle in ages past. Further back through the centuries, stone coffins were marked not with carvings, but with small statues of sleeping dragons. Further back still, with larger statues.

Deep in the shadowy crypt, a sheen of light caught Ariel’s eye. It came from a life-sized stone figure of a pearlcatcher, sitting upright, and holding their pearl. Their reflective, iridescent pearl.

Ariel approached the statue, and by the dim glow of his summoned light, examined the pearl. This, he realised, was no clever facsimile; it was a true pearlcatcher’s pearl.

He gazed at the stone face of the pearlcatcher, and murmured, “Who were you?”

The statue blinked.

Ariel stepped back, “What…”

No, it can’t have… it must have been a trick of the light. His pink ball of light flickered; he never was able to keep magic lights steady.

Ariel took a deep breath, and approached the statue again. He ran a paw over the statue’s tail, feeling the solid ridges carved to resemble the tuft of fur. Then further up, he ran his paw along the cool, hard length of the tail. It was, without a doubt, carved from stone.

The tail twitched.

Ariel jerked his paw away, and skittered back, the scrape of his claws deafeningly loud in the silent hall.

It was stone. It was cold, lifeless stone. Yet, there had been no mistaking the movement of its tail.

“What are you?” he said.

The stone made no reply.

The rapid thud of his heartbeat echoed through Ariel's skull.

Slowly, slowly, the stone pearlcatcher stretched out its wings.

Ariel fled.
