Biography

EARTHSHATTERER
[ high • priestess ]

daughter of the stormcatcher | ruthless, temperamental, brave

They call her Earthshatterer, now. She's the one who hears the ground as if it were a friend, interpret the shifts in wind and the raking storms. It's so long ago since anyone's ever remembered she was once Ayana: the unclaimed daughter of a refugee taken shelter in the Source. The city born on the reactor's remains was as innovative as it was cruel, cutthroat as the Stormcatcher herself. It was guided by the sages, the priests and priestesses who were exalted of the Storm-Mother. The life Ayana was given was the same story many of those in the slums of the Source lived: finding their homes in the wires and never getting to touch the bountiful electricity that radiated like the sun above them. Ayana was sharpened by her upbringing, was shaped by it. She would never speak of it now, but once she detested the city, longed to pull it down cord by cord, spire by spire, until it lay as flat as the leyline that made up its lifeblood. Of course, it was not as though Ayana never knew she was different. Even if she had not been born with the storm's hum within her, she would have found it some other way. Always, Ayana knew, she was destined for a life greater than this. Those who knew her fondly recalled her heart of courage, of righteousness, of that young spitfire who would never abandon the shanties that made her.

Change came on cruel wings. Ayana felt it even when no one else did: a tickle down her spine, an intuition that the stones far beneath their feet were beginning to tremble. The fear poisoned her every thought — so much that her people, her neighborhood, began to divide on whether Ayana was a prophet or simply possessed. Those who rallied around her nursed her ambition, told her that she had been given a Stormcatcher's gift and should present herself to the priestesses. It is not known who began to call her Earthshatterer first — perhaps even Ayana herself — but it was in this time that she began to wear it with pride. It deified her. No longer was she Ayana the refugee's child, but Earthshatterer, earthly speaker of the Stormcatcher. Her proclamations grew. It was not just the impending disaster she could sense, so she claimed, but the song of the Stormcatcher's energy that sewed through the planet and trembled as her children moved across it. Eventually, the Earthshatterer's presence in the Source began to be spoken of even in the apex. The priestesses had no choice but to see her.

Earthshatterer was more confident than Ayana, more ruthless and bold, and she divided the exalted as she did the Source. Some were compelled; it had been long since a Stormcatcher's chosen had awoken naturally, in a manner beyond study and worship. Others detested her upbringing and viewed her as a manipulator wanting to rise beyond her station. But Earthshatterer had enough support to compel the city, and so the Source did prepare itself for an impending disaster — perhaps begrudgingly, to some, but all dissent faded when the earthquake arrived. It shook the fortified city and a blackout seized the Source for the first time in history like a cold night. But its citizens were prepared. If this was a test of the faithful, as Earthshatterer proclaimed, they had chosen the right path. As the Source's heat began to beat again and power was restored, Earthshatterer was welcomed among the exalted, praised and adored. She was made high priestess among them, chosen of the Stormcatcher. Finally did that young child Ayana feel she had found her calling, her place. And she would never give it up.

In the years following that initial disaster, Earthshatterer's renown began to wane. There began talk of whether a new high priestess should take her place, if Earthshatterer's time had passed. The thought of losing even a fraction of the power she possessed shook Earthshatterer to her core. Again she was poisoned, though this time by greed. She knew what needed to be done: the Source needed another disaster. And then another again, and again, so that they might never forget the role she served amongst their small lives. So she prayed — and earned the ear of the east winds, the temperamental bringer of howling winds and rains. Thus she bargained with him: he might have all he desires of the Source, so long as he finds the means to summon disasters where and when she desires.

A small price to pay for all to be truly well within the Source, and to ensure Earthshatterer is never forgotten.
