Biography
There was a time, once, centuries ago, when she would have balked at the notion of stepping foot on mortal soil. The thought that she, the Night Mother, the All Queen, would sully herself with finite affairs; that she would lower herself to such a base state.
And yet, here she was.
She lifted the exhausted, birth wet form of her son from the ice and regarded him intensely. He squeaked pitifully in her grasp, straining against her cold talons as she turned him about, admiring the pattern of his scales and feathers.
“You will be like the scorpion’s sting.”
The hatchling quieted and turned his blind eyes towards her voice.
“You will grow, and you will be strong.” Iska dropped him to the icy remains of his egg, ignoring his mewling protest. “The corruption in you will spread until you cannot contain it. I have made you to be a blight on this world, on the entirety of this creation, to right a wrong done to me centuries past.”
She swung her head down to his level, grabbing his jaw tight in her claws and holding his blank gaze to her. “You will do exactly as I have made you to do.”
— — —
There was a time, once, at the beginning of his memory, where he remembered hearing her voice. The voice of his mother. She had left him years ago; left him in the care of a quiet, but kind, Guardian. The Matriarch, they called her. She was more a mother to him than the voice ever had been.
“Come, Shaula!”
The Skydancer pulled himself away from his thoughts and smiled. He needn’t dwell in the past.
“I’ll be right there!”
