~From the desk of Chickweed Caraway~

Kepri / Clan Sundial
═══════════════════════
My Location:
The Promenade! I’ve always wanted to visit this city, and the museums here are astounding!
Scholar
Crimes:
He had the habit of plagiarizing during our time together in University. The most dramatic example was when he copied some old texts to complete his dissertation on the shifting meaning of folklore.
Seeker Orb
Questions:
How did he get a in with the Forum Council? Did he know someone important?

NOTES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

I’ve always wanted to visit the Sunbeam Ruins. In particular, I’ve wanted to visit the Promenade, the largest city in the east, and it does not disappoint. The buildings are even taller than I thought, and there must be hundreds of clans living here. The bustle of the city is so refreshing compared to the wilderness I’ve been traveling through, and I have an excellent host.

Of course, it’s not like Kepri had much of a choice. I showed up at his lair, and after gently reminding me I knew exactly which library and book that contained his unsourced dissertation, he took me right in.

Ah, yes. Kepri and I go way back. In University, he was always so concerned with his grades, and told me all the lengths he took to preserve them. Now I get to reap the benefits.

He even set me up in a room view. Apparently, there’s plenty of empty dorm rooms at the university he teaches at, and I get a suite all to myself. It’s the nicest living conditions I’ve had since my stay with Dinara, and I’m feeling good.

Chiron doesn’t know where I am. Corriveau doesn’t know where I am. I am officially free, and watching the sunset over the city skyline is something that I’ll never forget.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: You know, it’s funny. Kepri and I went to the same university in the Starfall Isles, we got the same grades, and we both ended up becoming teachers. Only he ended up becoming a university professor with tight connections to the Forum Council and I ended up teaching ungrateful hatchlings basic writing and mathematics.

For a long time, I thought I was the unlucky one, but watching Kepri try to balance his work schedule is almost hilarious. Not only does he teach classical rhetoric and new-age literature, he’s also been tasked with curating the Forum Archive on behalf of Hikmat. He runs around like a startled bird all day, and with tuition dropping, he’s not even getting paid enough to make up for it.

I guess I was the lucky one after all.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Kepri has gotten much better at lying since our youth. The University Chancellor discovered that Kepri gave me a room and he told her I was an old friend who wanted to continue his education as a senior student, and that he was covering my tuition.

She bought it, but only after staring my down for an uncomfortable amount of time. The downside is that I have to play the part. I am now enrolled in Fracta University as Gradish Flatblade, with an emphasis in Draconic literature.

I’ve already sat through two of Kepri’s rhetoric lectures, and I’ve got to say, I could give him a few pointers. I wonder if the Chancellor has any teaching positions open. I may have food and board, but I’m nearly out of gems and could use an income.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: The best thing about being in this city is that I can finally read the news again. Guess what? Dinara isn’t dead like I assumed! Duchess Longshore is, but that’s no loss. I even learned a few new things about Chiron. He’s made the news a few times through his efforts with the Beastclans. I wouldn’t have thought him capable. I even read an article about my own Fracta University and how enrollment has been dropping sharply for the past three years.

That only cements my desire to find a job. Kepri may be willing to house me for now, but if he gets his pay cut again, he may move me into a closet in his own lair. I’m not wiling to be that much of a beggar.

Unfortunately, the Chancellor didn’t have any open positions open in the University, but I’ll look around. Most places wont want to hire an “senior” like myself, but it’s a big city. The’ll be something out there.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Kepri marked me down on one of my assignments. He clearly doesn’t understand the real nuances of persuasive speech.

He also said that the Chancellor was getting suspicious of me, but that’s his responsibility, not mine. If he wants to keep his status as an educated, honest professor, he’ll keep protecting me.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: I found a job. It’s not glamorous, but it doesn’t require any young dragon tasks that would break my joints. It’s at a printing press run by a pack of Mirrors who are voracious about their product. It’s my job to copy edit the newspaper manuscripts before the type is set. A few years ago, they accidentally misspelled the word “tentacles” in an article about the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and they’ve kept a few editors on payroll ever since.

My new boss told me that if I missed a single apostrophe I’d be fired on the spot and fed to the next serpenta they could find.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Kepri told me that my grades were slipping and that the Chancellor was only willing to humor him if I was sincere about the education. I told him that his credibility as a university professor would slip if he pressured me to quite my job. The job’s been tedious, but it’s been a while since I’ve had a real purpose.

My boss even offered me a promotion. Now that I’ve got a few gems of my own, I think I can finally settle down. Kepri will likely still house me if I use the right words, and I’m confident that Gradish Flatblade can be very happy in this city.

There’s only one problem. Chickweed Caraway is still unsatisfied. For the first time in two years, I’m safe, I’m fed, I’ve got a new name, and a way to support myself, but there’s still something bothering me. Chiron is still out there, completely absolved of everything that he put me through. He was the one put Corriveau on my trial, and he’s dragged me through the continent like a sack of wheat. Every sleepless night I’ve had, every day I spent terrified that it would be my last, is all his fault.

He doesn’t deserve to go unpunished.

Now that I’m working for a newspaper, I just might have something in mind. If I play nice and catch every single error on every single page, my boss might just let me write something of my own to publish. The Promenade Post may be a local newspaper, but dragons talk and I can always send out the paper with a courier, and it’ll be the end of Chiron Duskwing as I know him.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: I never realized how elegant a printing press is. The type looks all jumbled up, yet when ink is applied and the press is closed, the newspaper comes out neat and readable.

What’s not elegant, however, is the education system here in the Promenade. I had to take a sick day to visit a doctor, and my Post-Obscurity literature professor refused to let me make up an assignment. It’s incredibly unfair. It’s also a bit awkward to be the oldest student in the class. All the young dragons seem to be very into the idea of Returnism and they discount my arguments to be outdated.

I’m starting to think dropping out might be wise, but I’ve grown rather attached the view I have from my room. I also think I’m starting to stretch Kepri’s bank account, but I’m not too worried about that. Fortunately, he’s stopped bothering me about the Chancellor. It’s good to know he’s finally realized that it’s his responsibility to divert suspicion, not mine.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: I’ve done it! My boss, the sweet sweet Mirror who threatened to remove my claws if I missed any typos, has agreed to publish my very own article. Of course, I have to pay for the page space myself, but it’s a small price to pay for a lifetime of satisfaction.

I’ve already got the first draft written. There’s not a lot to say about Chiron himself, though I did describe how he deliberately endangered a helpless, elderly coatle and all the terrible conditions he subjected him to. Mainly, I focused on his father, Asuka, and all the shady little things he did before he died. After this, Chiron will have no hope of keeping his job with the Forum Council, and I doubt he’ll get hired by anyone else. His debt will slowly drown him until he’s either killed or pushed out of society to slowly die of exposure after his poor hunting skills fail him.

It’s nothing short of justice. I just need to polish it up, and I’ll submit it for publication in a few days.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Update: Writing has been my only friend for a long time. Even when I left my home in the Zephyr Steppes, I had my notebook. Even while I was living in a holes, breaking my bones, and being chased by dragons who wanted to kill me, I always had this stupid little notebook.

And now it’s all I have yet again.

Just a few hours earlier, Kepri asked me to join him for dinner, and I agreed. Everything seemed bright. I was going to turn in my article about Chiron to the Promenade Press the tomorrow morning, and I had already decided that I would let Kepri off the hook and resign as a student at Fracta University.

However, Kepri didn’t lead me out into the city. He led me to his office, and he wasn’t alone. The Chancellor was there, regarding me with the same solid stare she used when we first met. There was a stranger there, too. A tall, lean Wildclaw with electrically blue eyes.

They greeted me, and when I asked them what was going on, Kepri apologized that he would not be serving dinner.

The Wildclaw introduced himself as Mr. Isobar, and told me that his Clan leader had a few things she wanted to speak to me about. That took me a bit to process. Isobar. Clan Isobar, Corriveau Isobar. The dragon who wants me dead. And Kepri was selling me out to her.

I looked around the room and told the Chancellor that there must be a huge misunderstanding. I told her that Kepri was a plagiarist and I could prove it, and who would she rather believe? The liar who passed university with someone else’s work, or innocent Gradish Flatblade who just wanted to continue his education?

Kepri just sighed said the very phrase I didn’t want to hear: “Chickweed, they know who you are.”

The Chancellor didn’t change her expression. She told me that Clan Isobar just pledged a generous amount of gems to Fracta University, and that it’d be best if I went quietly.

What other choice did I have? I went quietly. The Isobar Wildclaw escorted me out into the city with a hard claw on my shoulder the whole time. He’s tucked me an inn somewhere, with a lock on the outside of the door, and just the barest window of light to write by. And so I write.

He hasn’t taken away my notebook yet. That’s all I have to cling to.
