The Matriarch
The Matriarch
Mafu is the matriarch of the remnants of a nomadic tribe. Several of their number had decided to settle down for some reason or another, join the rebellion in the Ashfall Wastes, or pursue some other goal of their own, away from the wandering ways of their ancestors. In time Mafu decided to take her family to settle somewhere as well. The Tundra's father had always expressed a love for the Sunbeam Ruins, and Mafu's sister had decided to settle in the place some time ago. So Mafu decided to find out what had drawn them so, and to reunite with her sister.
It was the season when the sun was nearing its fiercest that the Stanzascale clan found the family camped within the hunting ranges the clan frequented. The offer of hospitality was extended to the Tundras who were in the process of learning what it was like to stay in one place for every season.
Mafu's family carry with them jars, whose lids are each carved into the likeness of the head of one of their ancestors. A tuft of fur, scales, or often-worn cloth belonging to the individual is sealed within. They remember those who walked before them. The stories are shared, as each jar is passed between listeners, the scent kept by the jars reinforcing the memory.
Her family has a practice of giving Sweetpuffs to hatchlings, and having adolescents learn how to look after Ragepuffs. Within the once nomadic tribe, when a dragon hatched without siblings, their parents and other members of the clan dressed up in silly and colourful costumes to welcome them into the world. This is seen as born out of a desire to ensure that the newborn isn't lonely without siblings the same age. Part of their memories of Narida and Nedus is their enthusiasm for this tradition.
In addition, it is common practice to give gift-baskets (often of food or toys) to parents of a newly hatched clutch. A practice which others of the Stanzascale clan have adopted, with the inclusion of book-gifts.
Mafu sees 'Rainbow' as a lucky name for female dragons that goes in and out of fashion, her grandmother, and others of that generation, having been named such.
The matriarch has accepted work monster-hunting and bodyguarding, but the suggestion of assassination or 'pre-emptive' assault makes her snout curl. Mafu will commit to defending family and home and that is the start and end of it.
