Two hatchlings left in front of a wrought iron gate, told only that their elders knew better than they did. Their only duty was to their 'Charge'. Was it the door? The whole place beyond the door? Neither

Unless a dragon knew the code, they were to be chased off or captured if they came near.

How this protected their 'Charge', they did not know.
Yalanzun did know when Palus questioned and argued she was taken away, and came back with the strange purple growths. HOW DARE THEY

When she objected, tried to help Palus from the horrid crystals, they both got masks. Almost matching, save colour. They hurt. They didn't come off. The world felt hazy. A voice seemed to constantly remind that they MUST stay.

Questioning was dangerous. Snarling and chasing was easier. The only way to survive.

Sometimes they could hear one another without speaking. Like the voice that said to stay, but not quite. Working together felt good. Easy. If Yalanzun pounced, Palus was already dashing to cut off their retreat. If Palus took flight, Yalanzun knew to follow. When they saw their opening, they'd be free

When the ones inside the door took one of the two away it was misery. It was wrong with only one dragon outside the gate. It was wrong without her.

They had to guard their Charge together. Why didn't those in the door know that part? Because it was all LIES.
