Personality: For the most part Anders is rather stoic and reserved. Though he has long moved past the bad temper that plagued him in his younger days, he is still possessed of a cynical streak and trust issues that make him reluctant to open up to new people. He can occasionally come across as cold and taciturn without really meaning to be. However, he can be charismatic when he wants to, and is a natural born leader. In spite of his cool demeanor, he does care deeply about the dragons who he is responsible for. If one can get past the barriers Anders has constructed around himself, they will find that he is a profoundly compassionate dragon. If he cares about someone, he will go to any lengths to protect them. Though he doesn't make friends easily, he is extremely loyal to the few friends he does have and shows a much more cheerful and outgoing side of himself to those he trusts.

History: Sometimes, very rarely, if a dragon is born in a conjunction of the elemental ley lines, they will have the power to harness more than one type of elemental magic. These dragons are called archmages, and are revered by their fellows. Sometimes, even more rarely, that dragon will be born without the ability to harness any magic at all. These dragons are given the cruel nickname ‘blanks,’ and are often spurnned by others of their kind. For dragons, born in the magic of the gods and living in it at all times, having no magic at all is a sign that something must be badly, badly wrong with you.

Anders is one of this later sort. Though born from an ice egg in the Southern Icefields, and possessing the light blue-silver eyes of an ice dragon, his body holds withing it not even the tiniest spark of ice magic. Though most ice dragons can instinctively spit frigid shards and coat their claws in frost from infanthood, Anders has never been able to no matter how hard he tries. This caused the young skydancer to be spurned and ignored by his father Olander, passed over in the succession of leadership for their small clan in favor of his younger adopted brother Filipe.

Anders grew up lonely, bitter, and estranged from his family. He questioned the existence of the gods who seemed to have forsaken him at birth. Eventually, he and his brothers agreed to try to start over a new life in a clan big enough to give them space from one another, but even in this new clan- Clan Brayuh- Anders struggled to find acceptance. He could tell the others pitied him, and he didn’t want to be pitied; he wanted to be appreciated for who he was and what he could do irrespective of magic.

He eventually joined the clan’s phoenix knights- a group of warrior dragons who fought in the air by cloaking their wings in elemental magic- in order to prove his worth. Anders got a little help from the clan’s mages to coat his wings in ice with a spelled object to supplement his own lack of magic. Though he wasn’t the most proficient at using the magical wing-weapons, lacking the fine control his fellows had, he swiftly proved himself to have a keen head for strategy and surprisingly good natural leadership skills. Over time he ascended the ranks of the phoenix knights until he was appointed their commander, with Cai working as his second.

Anders never fully got over his crippling self-esteem issues, however, constantly convinced he was one misstep away from losing all he had gained for himself. He worked obsessively hard, often to the point of collapse. He had very few true friends- only his flight partner Mirja and his mate Carver- and most others he kept at a distance out of fear of losing friendships that might have formed. Eventually this precarious psychological position he was in was noticed by one of the clan’s enemies, a pearlcatcher named Piotr. Piotr preyed on Anders’ insecurities, feeding him a stream of half-truths and twisting his perceptions so that the skydancer overanalyzed every little interaction he found himself in for veiled insults, condescension, or pity. Eventually this pushed Anders over an edge, and he had a complete mental breakdown. Deciding that he needed some time alone, he appointed Cai as the leader of the phoenix knights and left Clan Brayuh, promising to return only when he figured himself out.

It would be over a year before Anders returned, but it was clear that his time away had given him a sense of peace. A perspective on the wider world he didn't have before. He swiftly proved that, magic or not, he was intelligent, competent, and charismatic. And, to his immense surprise, when the former clan leader Belial decided to retire, Anders was appointed as his successor.

Love LifeCarver is everything Anders is not- easygoing, fun-loving, and possessed of a lively sense of humor. He is one of the few dragons in Sornieth who can actually get Anders to crack a smile every so often.

Anders really does not feel like he deserves Carver. A cheery, energetic cowboy with a profound wanderlust who not only settled down in Clan Brayuh for him, but stayed there and waited for Anders to return from his travels for over a year? Anders wouldn’t have blamed Carver if the imperial got tired of waiting and left, but he is deliriously glad the cowboy didn’t.

Carver wasn’t happy to have been left alone for a year, mind, and certainly gave his mate a piece of his mind after Anders returned. But that’s just one more thing Anders appreciates about Carver- his iron willingness to stick up for himself even despite the skydancer’s aloofness and occasional temper.
