Spike
____________
For every scale that's plucked
A fish spawns in the sea For every monster slain Abundance for you and me! Hail the bringer of victory! Hail the Scaleless King! This chant, a common nursery rhyme in select villages across ocean towns and settlements, takes its origin from a folk hero guardian, who supposedly travelled the world hunting for more of his obsession: victory. Who said a guardian couldn't hoard memories, hoard a concept? Someone, likely enough, someone that Spike chooses to ignore! His whole life has been a mystery, a fable in the making with questions unsolved littering his past. Usually, a drake's story would begin with the hatching and childhood- not for Spike. He has no memory of ever having a childhood, his first memory actually being his first victorious conquest against a pack of Wintermane Centaurs. Yes, he was gangly and young, but not a child and never was. How that came to be? He's never cared to look into it. He boasts of being born purely from purpose, from the desires of the dragons he saves or assists, and it's the best running theory out there. The second mystery is his scales. Namely, how he doesn't have any! Instead, his hide seems to be tougher than any metallic armor dragon kind has made, unnaturally. Sorcerers and mages see no magic reason for it, and nobody's been able to remove a piece of skin to test because nothing's been able to pierce it. For all intents and purposes, Spike can't bleed. Yes, he's broken bones, yes he's been knocked unconscious by massive blows, but a drop of blood has never hit the ground! The third mystery lies in his skin, once again. Covering the leathery hide is a fine dust, which glitters as it migrates over him like a living constellation. It seems to be difficult to dislodge, impossible to clean, and impossibly effective as a anti magic protection. Spells of all kinds are blocked by a sudden rush of this dust to their intended target, covering the spot and consuming the spell energy using its mass. The spent dust falls from him as snow. Why snow? Perhaps due to his eye type, even while lacking heritage to draw back on? So what does a nearly invincible, battle-ready, boastful and glory-hog guardian do with his life? Find out what's worthy to fight, and battle it until someone gives in! As of yet, the one to surrender has never been him. And, as a show of good faith, he has never once killed an enemy. Why? "Well, that would just be unfair! I can't be killed, so why should they die? They did their best, and I did mine. Mine just happened to be better! Aha!" He tends to challenge dragons in friendly spars as he grows bored from travel, including other guardians... Anyone who accepts. In the case of a certain female, a specific Crystal, a challenge was welcomed for just the same reason; the boredom of empty skies and empty days, not even wind to gnash fang towards. And oh, what a brutal fight that was! Claws were ripped from their sockets, forest was unearthed and the earth itself shook from the dives the two took as they tangled, enjoying nothing but the glory of battle and the rush of adrenaline. Of course, though, Spike won. He's never lost. That isn't to say he wasn't roughed up- it was one of his most intense battles! One of the greatest victories to store away in the hoard of his mind! Who better than this defeated and grinning guardian, this Crystal challenger, to walk alongside? She explained her mission, to protect and serve. He explained his, to battle and rescue. Same goal, with different words behind them. Same travels, of the same breed, of the same walks of life. Heading, coincidentally, in the same direction. Does anything more have to be said? Admiration grows into love. Love, into partnership. Hail the protectors of dragon kind Hail the Scaleless King! Hail the ones he walks aside Hail the followers of the King! Hail the Ruler's of Gem and Dust! All Hail! All Hail! |
