Mael is one of the First Five, the first dragons chosen by Hurricane to found Traveler's Rest. He's a cautious dragon, preferring to think for a long time before he acts. As one of the Rest's leaders, Mael is in charge of the city's finances, approving funding for projects such as social services and infrastructure. This was not always the case, however, as for a brief time the city's finances were handled by Siris. The job was given back to Mael after the Wildclaw's embezzlement and smuggling were discovered and he was removed from office. Born to a roaming pack of Mirrors in the Charged Barrens, Mael always trailed a bit behind his family. While his siblings and cousins readily stripped old machines for parts and scrap metal, Mael preferred to try and fix them. This led to him being scorned by the pack, and he was often left in their dust when the time came to move on. One day, during a harsh sandstorm, Mael became separated from his pack for good. Lost in the sands, he almost succumbed to dehydration and heatstroke before being found by Hurricane and taken back to the bare beginnings of Traveler's Rest. Once safely out of the desert, Mael was nursed back to health by Belinda. The Guardian reassured Mael that she wouldn't return him to his pack, and that he could stay in her camp for as long as he liked. "As long as he liked" would turn out to be forever, as the two would become the first couple to be married on the Rest's soil, and would become part of the city's ruling council alongside Koi, Jade, and Sylph. When not performing his duties as a council member, Mael keeps up his old interest in machines, building little moving models to share with others. His daughter Amala in particular is very fond of them. He can also be found in the city library, or walking the gardens with Belinda. |
