For a long time, Akali thought he was a harbinger of death. It was a terrible thought to bear as a hatchling. Too young to understand the truth of his magic, he thought that every death around him was his fault, was a product of the magic he could feel humming in his blood. Each time his veins caught fire, someone died within the hour, and Akali was terrified that he was causing it to happen. He feared for the safety of his parents and his brothers, for the rest of his clan, for all the world. If he could not control the fire, who would die next? But now, he knows it is not his fault. His magic does not bring death, but follows it. Whenever a death is imminent, the fire settles in, and Akali is forced to withdraw, battling the pain. The more terrible the death, he has learned, the more vicious the fire. But the sooner Akali acts, the sooner the death might be prevented. It’s not a perfect science, and he doesn’t claim to fully understand the way his magic works, but sometimes, if he can fight through the pain, he can find the slated dead in time to reverse their fates. Combating destiny takes its toll, though, and lately, he has been weary. He cannot prevent every death no matter how hard he tries, and sooner or later, the fire in his veins may spell his own end.

Sluagh gets the deets about future events in the Clan from his dead sister Aurum, who scouts for any helpful information and reports back to him. Psychi has vague senses that give her a prediction of a future event, usually an hour before it happens. Akali feels pain when someone nearby is going to die within the hour.‹━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━« Between the three seers (and with the much needed help of During’s planning) they can usually sleuth out whatever tragedy is going to strike with moderate accuracy. Getting the gist of it is easy, stopping it is harder. And tempting fate is dangerous. There’s no guarantee that the dragon(s) fated to die won’t be struck down by some other unforeseen disaster even if the first is prevented. And perhaps one day it will be one of them who will take the bullet for denying fate its target. |
