Mai She/Her PROJECT: # 005 Average Sized Light Weight Skydancer Elite Soldier | Reluctant Tutor | Hot Mess by Choice Some might say Skydancers are a gentle, sensitive, and emotive breed of dragon. And while Lady Knight Mai is certainly emotive, and you might call her sensitive, gentle is definitely not an apt description. As a hatchling, her ability to read the emotions in the air often overwhelmed her entirely, flooding her with foreign emotions that she couldn't handle or understand. As an adult, Mai has honed her control over the senses to the point where she can numb herself completely to the outside world--and she does so frequently. Emotional shielding is a double-edged sword with a price though, and the more she numbs herself to the emotions of others, the more she numbs herself to her own. Mai is the best of the best fighters in all of Sornieth, that there ever was and ever will be (if you ask her anyway). And yet, despite what one might expect, it's a very dull life. This has as much to do with her lack of emotions as it does with everyone else's lack of skill, in her opinion. It's hard to find joy in a one-sided battle. She longs to find an opponent who can give her the challenge she's been searching for, yearns for the passion and adrenaline of a real fight. Regretfully though, she knows this will never happen- she is simply Too Strong™ (and too numb). Try as she might to act cold and aloof, however, she is inherently a social species and craves the attention (and praise) of others. To her "great reluctance", Mai has agreed to teach the blacksmith, Taiga, and train him in the art of swordsmanship in exchange for a legendary quality blade. Worse, he's actually a very apt student, and she finds herself growing more and more fond of him every day. She can't decide if it's a good or bad thing that they aren't physically compatible. It's partly due to her burgeoning relationship with Taiga that Mai is extremely reluctant to train Kishima. He's a perfectly nice dragon and all, but teaching him means less time spent alone with Taiga. Mai finds the water egg on the Western coast of the Sunbeam Ruins, just North of the Tsunami Flats. It's a tiny little thing, brilliant blue and covered in barnacles, half-submerged in the sand. And, well... Look, don't get it wrong, she's not the parenting type. But. She can't just leave it here can she? There's an Emperor around here, you know! So she takes the egg back to the clan and leaves it in the capable claws of the nusery caretakers. If only that were the end of it. The egg hatches, of course, and out comes a tiny shale spiral with a belly full of bronze. She's not there when it happens, but she swings by later at the nursery's request and witnesses the hatchling in all it's tiny wrinkly glory. A male, apparently, who stares up at her with enormous blue eyes. He's criminally adorable and she's hopelessly, instantly attached. When they say she gets first pick of names as the one who found the egg, Mai doesn't hesitate, and that's how she ends up as little Tobe's new big sister. Although hatchlings are communally raised in the clan and she had no obligation, Mai has claimed Tobe as her own, training him and watching over him. So used to always feeling so numb, the young spiral elicits an unfamiliar warmth, a type of love she had forgotten she knew how to feel. Now that he is of age, she has formally taken him on as her apprentice--in contrast to her ambiguous and informal relationship with Taiga, which has regretfully been placed on the backburner to simmer in the meantime. Her favourite food is Plaguebringer's Delight, which she's not supposed to eat because it's bad for her as a Skydancer, but also because it's bad for dragons in general. Also Diarmaid hates catching it and whines about it constantly (he still catches it though). Notable Ancestors: Daiga'an, the Scarred Shurann, the Awful Lightning Khashmina |
