Hidden in a tangle of old roots lays a patch of sagging mushrooms, lazily coughing out their spores. You cover your mouth as you approach, ducking to avoid long sheets of moss dangling from the roof of the cavern. The hunters circle, yes… they’ve been there before. Not new. Never new. Danger. Danger... by the Tower. How is the Tower? Moss will tell me. Tells much. You clear your throat to announce your presence, assuming the mumbling dragon didn’t notice you. The mass of mushrooms shifts in front of your eyes, and you realize you’ve been staring at the dragon’s backside. This dragon looks older than others in the clan, though it’s hard to tell with all the growths on their skin. Who are you? A new member? Sign the book. Have to keep track. Matriarch guards, watches, waits… I keep moving. Can’t sit still, so much to do, so much to delegate. Dragons here, dragons in the Sourglade, fighting Serthis, Tower, Path! Who keeps track? Who knows where they are, where they’re going, when they come back? Me! Matriarch makes demands, I make results. Logistics, you understand? Of course you do. Logistics. A few shriveled flowers fall from the dragon’s wings, adding to the crunchy mat coating the floor. Beneath the crumbled remains of many a crushed petal lies some sort of map, covered in symbols you don’t recognize. There are other sheets of birch bark adhered to the mossy walls of the cave with sap, scrawled with names, dates, and locations. The dragon waddles up to you on their back legs, their forelegs busy handling an orb. It takes you a minute to decide that this must be a pearlcatcher, but the object they are holding is not like any pearl you’ve seen before. Its bumpy, plantlike, seeping dark grey liquid onto the map below. Small creatures hiding in the dragon’s mane dart out to lick up the fluid. Lost in the glades for a long time. Forgot where I was. Lost track. Can’t remember. Life, death, blends together. Both consume each other. Someone lost me, someone found me. Did the glade take? Did death? The dragon stares at you intently, their eyes clear with understanding. More than anyone else you’ve met in this clan, you feel like this dragon recognizes you, your purpose. They slowly press their pearl against your chest. I know where I am now. |
