Mysterious Relief
Have you ever met a pearlcatcher with two pearls? How about three? Four?
No, of course you haven't. Nor would you want to...

At the center of Clan Paralian's territory is a great volcano.

There are others, yes. Sprouting from the sea, together. But the greatest one, that is where the clan has made their den. And on that mountain island's Eastern face, there is a crescent of trees. In that crimson and coal colored forest, half-lit and thick with woods, there are temples hidden in the overgrowth, and the soil is fertile with something.

You walk a path through that forest, past gardens and gazing balls, statues and strange effigies. Lanterns and long-abandoned campfires that somehow still smolder. At last you come upon a shrine, and enter. A crackling brazier burns at its center, giving off a tentative hiss...

...or perhaps that was the dragon. An eerie pearlcatcher, who looks you up and down in one glance. Her expression is unreadable as she passes one, two, three, four pearls between far too many hands...

Well.

Want to hear what I have to say? Of course you do. Just know that my time comes at a price. All good things do.

Tell me about yourself.

Hmmmm. Wouldn't you like to know.

Where am I?
The Embergrounds. A garden of forgotten gods. Are the priestesses who shuffle through this ruin wardens or prisoners, blessed or damned?

You may hear that the Embergrounds themselves are damned. That we buried something, or someone here that we shouldn't have. Or that the magic of this place was poisoned long ago, a misfortune that precedes us. Or that the King himself is the curse, and that these fire islands, from top to bottom, in and out, stone and sea will be sinister as long as he remains. But have you met the King? I doubt it.

What do you say? Is this place cursed, or not?
Child, Sornieth is cursed. Look around you. You will see.

I did look around, and I saw something I wish I hadn't...
That is the risk, isn't it?

Valr is one of those things.
Indeed. Among the tempter's horde was a shattered obelisk, which the Guard meticulously reassembled. What was missing, they restored with molten gold, poured into its cracks. Fools for decadence, the Guard. And fools for restoring such a creature. Some things are meant to remain broken.

Is Sethov broken?
Not according to the skydancers. But what does a skydancer know.

Tell me about the skydancers, then. About Atilana.
Second of her name with the memories of the first. Even I am uncertain how that works. Perhaps because it doesn't.

And Lilithe?
What is there to tell about someone who clings to such dogma, other than that they are already lost?

Is Ortolan your mate?
Aye. For many years. Perhaps in your travels you have seen our children, or our children's children. Any dragon that looks like us is likely of our blood.

Tell me about Vanadis.
I'll tell you that the little token Atilana put on her is of no use.

I gave a small token to Verdigris.
And what you were given in exchange belongs to you, and you alone.

Do all of those pearls belong to you, and you alone?
They do now.

A mound of charcoal collapses in the brazier, sending a bright dusting of embers shimmering into the air. The pearlcatcher laughs softly.
