Biography
SMARAGDUS
╭━━━━━⚔━━━━━╮ introspection solitude enouement ╰━━━━━━━━━━━╯ |
Far away and long ago, a nest at the furthest edge of the Sea of a Thousand Currents stirs. They are born with blue eyes. He is not. T H E • K I N G ' S • T A L E It is said that some clans are unlucky or unwise enough to nest at the seam of two territories. The King Paralian, long before he was king, was born sickly, small, and far away from his other siblings, as though his egg had rolled away with a renegade tide. Perhaps it wouldn't have mattered. They were the colors of rose and sand and silver, and he was the color of fire and blood. They were healthy and strong, and he struggled to even carry his own weight. His parents rarely met his red-gold eyes with their own, and on the morning he woke up without them, it was with little surprise. So an abandoned guardian whelp wandered the Wastes for years, managing to survive. The how and what and where of these years belong to the King, and the King alone. Smaragdus is not generous with details. He will tell you that his skin was soft and supple, until the Hearth baked him in heat and ash, and he scraped it in dead, itching layers away on rocks. He will tell you that when he reached the southernmost flows of the Scar, he had torn nearly all of it from him, and that the sinuous, eel-like hide he was born with had cured to the hard curve of polished stone. Polished stone very unlike the dark red and glittering orange scales of his youth. Polished stone colored a rippled, glossy green like the bottom of the sea. He will tell you that he supposes the Gods have their jokes. In emerald skin, the King perched on the edge of a fiery cliff by the sea. It was then, feeling more like a stranger than he had when he first walked the Flameforger's lands, that he saw himself from the shore. A lonely ridge of volcanoes jutting out of the sea, crowned in fire but born from water. Smaragdus lifted himself from the edge of the cliff, and flew. T H E • Q U E E N ' S • A S C E N T One dark and dreary morning, she leaves. Disappears into the storm. Doesn't come back. They're lost without her, and so is he, they whisper. That's what they suppose, anyway. But on the same morning that she leaves, their mountain heaves fire for the first time in years. The ocean boils and the sky churns, and the king emerges from his chambers. Has it been longer since they've seen him, or longer since the mountain burned? No one is sure. But he was different before, wasn't he? That glossy green hide has hardened to black, embossed in fire like Mother intended. For a third time, he changes. His veins are full of magma ichor and his queen is gone, but he says nothing. He doesn't ask why anymore. |
