Biography

pathfinder: a space probe deployed to mars in 1997.
friendly, calm, loyal
bp2.png
Pathfinder is the last person you'd expect to have an affinity for the supernatural. He's quiet, keeps to himself, and mostly devotes himself to his work programming guidance systems for rockets. That isn't to say he doesn't know how to relax--he's often invited to outings by friends, which he attends, although he's far from the life of the party--but he's easily one of the most emotionally collected people you'll ever meet. Everything about him seems calm. [Name here; I exalted the old director of this department and now I gotta figure out who to replace her with] says it's what makes him such a good asset on ground control. No matter how frustrating or scary his job can get, Pathfinder is one of the few dragons you can trust to keep a level head and get the mission done. He's saved more than a few cosmonauts out of sheer coolness. It's honestly a little incredible.

But behind that centeredness, Pathfinder does have a few peculiar spiritual beliefs. For one thing, he has extremely specific memories of what he's sure are a past life. He remembers being from a lush, populated planet, much like Sonrieth in appearance, and yet also visiting a barren, dusty world, covered in red sands and rocks. All he's sure of is that the journey was for the purpose of exploration. Other than that, he also knows that his body was almost nothing like his current one. He had no wings, and was bipedal, and had hair, but no fur or feathers.

Perhaps, though, it's to be expected. Little do many people know, but Pathfinder was born not from an egg, but from the firing of a rocket which carried Sonrieth's first artificial satellite. It's from another, much more secretive, spaceflight agency, and the details are very hush-hush, but rumor has it he was born due to a burst of magic during the launch. Not your everyday release of Breath, either; it was the sheer anticipation that created him.

That's what he says, anyways. And no one really has reason to doubt him. The agency whose rocket created him sent the poor kid to the Baikonur clan because they didn't have any lair space, and the kid got so attached to his new clanmates that he refused to go back.

The one thing he's sure of that the whole clan can agree on? Dragonkind is destined to go to the stars. It's a pretty simple statement, and most of the dragons in the clan know it, but Pathfinder is one of the few dragons that really feels it. The universe, he knows, is vast, and Dragonkind is far from alone. He doesn't want his spirituality to guide his scientific life, but he just knows there's at least one other species out there exploring and probing this existence as much and as curiously as they are. If only, if only they could establish contact...
mars is there, waiting to be reached.

Baikonur Mission Control
Job:
misson controller & software developer (mostly for guidance)

some fun facts:
  • he's quiet because he's just not good at social things at all. never has been. and no one ever really taught him how to talk about things that aren't spaceflight so when it comes to other stuff he keeps his mouth shut
  • after the deaths of two cosmonauts in a vehicle with a broken heat shield, he constructed the statue Salyut in their memory. not many people know about it, but everyone who worked at mission control when it was made was shocked because none of them knew Pathfinder could sculpt because he just doesn't talk to people about his hobbies.
  • i would say he's in a relationship with kranz, but he's so avoidant of people that i feel like he'd just keep his crush on kranz to himself. which is sad because kranz would so love him back if pathfinder would open up to him
  • the first time someone pointed out to him that he was a guidance officer named pathfinder, and the pun there, he actually felt so weird about it that he considered switching to another position. (he'd gotten the position because he spent years developing software for it, and since he was primarily a software engineer anyways, he was prepared to give up a spot in mission control and just do computer work.) he talked a little bit about it to voyager, who was tl;dr like "do not leave mission control we need you so much dude"
  • he's got a HUGE soft spot for older computers, because in college, he worked at a computer history museum and eventually worked his way up to doing demos with some older computers that were still operational. he'll talk about them like they're his children. also he's the only person within a like 75 mile radius who knows dragon fortran probably.
  • he and HAL, a sentient supercomputer who helps out the flight controllers, are huge buddies. pathfinder helped set up HAL and they've been chill ever since
  • while pathfinder regards HAL as a friend, HAL has a crush on pathfinder, which worries his programmers a lot because the whole giving the computer a crush thing was supposed to be taken out like, 12 software updates ago. but now that he's live they kinda can't fix it without him yelling at them to mind their business. neither HAL nor the programmers have told pathfinder this, though.
