Bloodfeather Construct

The Shattered are dragons that are constructed of bone and blood. They contain the soul of a deceased dragon in the skull that acts as their head- nestled atop of a neck of blood. These dragons exist in an unusual state - as though they can be destroyed, the dragon can be brought back to existence so long as the skull remains intact by simply remaking a body and placing the skull upon it. The result is a dragon that needs no sleep, no food, and has but a few weaknesses.

Vorastoque is a Shattered Construct who was created during a time of desperate strife by the King, the Arcane Conduit, and the Artisan in the Clan of Singing Blood to be used against a dangerous and otherworldly entity which had escaped one of the Icewarden's hidden prisons.

But that is not where her story started...

The Lost Daughter

Long ago Endusk and Endawn were born to Finnigan and Saldeti. The two were blessed and promised to allied clans in other Elemental Flights, to improve relations in those distant lands. Endawn was bound for a light clan, and Endusk for Shadow, but Endusk never made it to her destination. No one knew what became of her. Her and all her escorts vanished, they never reached their destination in the Tangled Wood.
Finnigan was overwhelmed by grief. Saldeti was furious at the incompetence of her daughter's protectors. There would be no closure for either of them for many years. Finnigan loved and spoiled all his children, but his heart could never be mended when one of them was hurt. He maintained hope that Endusk was alive, that they had just gotten lost in the Shadowbinder's beguiling domain. Saldeti was fiercely protective and trained all their children to fight and survive on their own so that they would never have to rely on anyone else again. She was sure that Endusk had perished.

That did not help the pain she felt when she was finally proven right. Her daughter's remains and those of her guards had been found, they had not made it out of the Scarred Wasteland. The entire group met their demise at its border. The remains were found at the bottom of a canyon, previously held by hostile beast clan.

Saldeti saw to her post-mortem exaltation, a ritual in her honor so that new life, stronger and more suited to survival might come from her death. After the completion of this ceremony, when all others had departed the Queen slipped up beside the grave. She dug into the corrupt soil and lifted out the skull of the long-dead coatl. Gazing upon it she divined it was a necessary deed. A fate awaited this skull, and while she could see that clearly, she could not see what it was.

Minstri took the skull to her chamber, and there it sat, very nearly forgotten about for a very long time. Neither Finnigan nor Saldeti knew of this strange and prophetic act of grave robbing, and even if they did, there would have been no argument to make against the Queen of Singing Blood.

Blade of the King

When the Eyebite escaped the King had a need for a weapon, a construct of great power and particular design. The Eyebite was an Outsider, a thing of the Shade's dimension, a thing from the darkness behind the stars. Sovri needed a draconic construct which could be attuned to the Eyebite's power and bound with a Bane that could disable it.

In order to support the necessary magical workings, the weapon could not be of Sorneith, it had to be of substance and soul of Elsewhere. The construct had to be wrought from the Bone and Blood of an Outsider. A living dragon might also have worked, but the weapon would almost certainly be destroyed when it was used, killing or corrupting whatever used it. A construct could be expendable, and a construct could be made to exact specifications. There need be no uncertainty or imperfection.

Sovri was one such dragon, an Outsider - a soul from Elsewhere with a body woven from light and flesh and forgotten knowledge. It was the only thing which made this particular plan worth pursuing. He would donate his own blood and bones to the weapon's design, but he could not give it life with his own skull and soul.
He had barely begun the search for a compatible individual's head when the Queen offered her brother the forgotten skull in her chamber. It was Finnigan's daughter, and Finnigan too was an Outsider... the very first which Minstri had summoned to join her on Sorneith. Endusk's skull could be used to make the construct, and she could be reborn a dire weapon.

Sovri balked. To make Finnigan's lost daughter into such a monstrous weapon, one which he knew was to be sacrificed in the final battle, would be a terrible thing to do to his dear friend. Minstri laughed at her brother, mocking him for being so soft-hearted. This was Endusk's true purpose. Her life and death had been for this. She had even perished in the very canyon where the Clan of Singing Blood now warred against the Clan at Bonewood Refuge, right on the border between the Scarred Wasteland and the Tangled Wood.

So he took the skull and brought it to Saestis and Mandurugo, acquiring from them the blueprints to make a Shattered Construct for this monumental project.

Aside from the skull, the rest of the dragon was made from the King's own body. He broke and removed portions of his own bones, healing, regrowing, and repeating, over and over until they had enough to make the carapace and support material for the construct's body. He drained his own blood into the terrible creation and his magic along with it. All the while Sahko carefully manipulated its magics, attuning it to the necessary elemental keys, and binding to it a Bane for the Eyebite.

The weapon was named Vorastoque, the Sword of Teeth. From the King she had inherited a bottomless hunger. By design she had been given a taste for destruction.

Vorastoque did not remember the dragon she was in life, and Sovri considered this a blessing. She was trained and honed quickly and forcibly by magic into a warrior and an infiltrator, and she fulfilled her singular purpose - she reached the Eyebite and delivered its doom. As the trap she had been saddled with was sprung, her insides were set ablaze with a magical wildfire. She had no real concept then of what was occurring in and around her, only that she had done her duty, and that the sheltered and loving home which had been created in that canyon was brought to ruin by her hand. Her prey had been captured, but it had also captured her. She could feel it take hold of her mind and soul. It gave her the cruelest gift it could... comprehension.

Without a Sheath

The king retrieved her skull from the wreckage. It was intact, a dragon's soul still bound within. He could sense the damage the Eyebite had done on it, like an oily residue. He considered smashing the thing but something stopped him. He brought her home, remade her body, this time with only Verthandi's help. Sahko wanted badly to have the skull for his research; Sovri denied him.

She remembered herself, her old memories of life. She saw and understood what she had become. She had bits and pieces of Sovri's memories, the agony he had endured while forging her. She was a weapon. That was her purpose and always would be. She grinned at the King, though she was always grinning a skull's eternal expression. She was hungry and wanted nothing other than to bring ruin to his enemies.

Sovri looked at her and reflected on Finnigan's children, most of whom would refer to him with easy familiarity as their uncle, all of whom Finnigan trusted him with completely. He thought of his own daughter.

"You will be my ruin," Sovri said, but she only laughed at him. He would have had her unmade if he could, but he could not bring himself to do it. He suspected that the Eyebite may have set a curse upon them both to ensure that was the case.

The King decided to send Vorastoque away. If she remained with the clan, it would only be a matter of time before Finnigan discovered the evil he had done. Even if that weren't a problem, Sovri could scarcely stand to look at her.
