A rare but severe illness ravaged Ruga's body when she was a child, leaving her with scarring across her body. Her mutated wings were unsuitable even for gliding. Other Coatl looked upon her with disgust and horror. Hers was a lonely childhood, but Ruga lets the fact that she's a survivor strengthen her resolve to be the best in her field. She became a builder, tinkering with toys, radios, other machinery, and studying how it all came together. As an adult, she met a courier dragon in her old clan, a Wildclaw named Saestis. Ruga was impressed by his speed and efficiency in his work, and she was taken by the fact that he didn't recoil at the sight of her. He disappeared for a while after he experienced an accident that took the use of his arms. She had helped invent a new type of limb prosthetic that could enable action potentials from the user's nervous system to travel through the prosthesis for more dynamic movement than ever thought possible. Though it had a few bugs, the technology was revolutionary. She and her partner, a Lightning Mirror, were granted opportunities to test their prosthetics on willing subjects (including Saestis) and they worked quite well. Her Mirror partner, however, claimed full credit for the technology under the guise of "keeping her out of the limelight", to avoid embarrassing her. But she didn't want to be hidden. When she came forward to accuse him of stealing, she discovered he'd stolen her research notes, as well --- her only proof against him. She was run out of their town while he basked in the glory, but not before she took some of the building supplies, scraps she could recover of her notes, and Saestis.
