"Fans, shadows, the ebb and flow of motion itself… They all serve to hide the body as much as they do to reveal it. It’s a game of control, you see… of only showing just enough to keep them interested, and keeping enough secret that you still have something, too. In the end, after all, what do we have except what we’ve left of us for ourselves?”

Eissu was previously a part of a great king’s performers, and her fan and shadow performances were some of the most breathtaking and well-guarded of the entire troupe. She loved expressing that part of herself, but soon the emperor and his courtiers started asking more and more of her, leaving her exhausted at the end of each night. And so one night after her performances, instead of slipping back into the dressing chambers, she ran. Her wings took her as far as they could, until the shadows felt like they would swallow her up, and just when she felt she would collapse she met Grim, and he guided her deep into the ruins so that the King’s claws couldn’t follow her.

She hid in the overhangs of the ruins while the king searched, shielded by the clan. But she soon grew attached to the landscape and dragons there who had helped her so much and shown her so much kindness and care during her darkest hours. It was a place to heal and move on from the violence in her past. While right now she is still wrestling with the worst of her demons, she’s slowly reclaiming the performing she loved so much, and enjoys practicing under the faint light of the full moon or dim glow of warm candles when the rest of the clan is fast asleep.
